As a child, we always had lots of watermelon in the summer.  My mother would make pickles with the rind - haven't had those in years and I loved them.

I have never even heard of pickled watermelon rind catM but it sounds like it just might be :Yum: :Yum:

They are WONDERFUL. I have never seen it in stores though. A very sweet pickle. Now I am going to have to make some. Unfortunately, I can't eat watermelon - but I bet I can find plenty of volunteers in the neighborhood. rofl rofl

^"^  :^:  :soar:    EAGLELAND IS WINDING DOWN PEEPS!  MOST OF THE EAGLETS HAVE
FLEDGED AND LOTS OF THE CAMS ARE NOT OPERATING DUE TO MALFUNCTIONS.
WILL TRY TO GET CAPTURES THIS WEEK (I PREFER NOT TO SNAG THEM OFF THE
FORUMS) BUT IF THE NESTS ARE EMPTY, EAGLELAND WILL RETURN NEST SEASON. :soar:  ^"^  :^:

Carole, I knew it would have to end but I will really miss it until 'nest' year. :'( :'( :'(
Eagleland is a true labour of  You are a doll for doing that each and every day :Hugs:
:><: :><: :><: for all your dedication.

The 'Fly Like An Eagle Video' by the Steve Miller Band is a perfect one for the fledglings as they begin their journey to adult eaglehood :soar: Laurie. Thanks for that :)^

<3 It has been a long while since my last posting. All is well. Kids arrived in N.C. Saturday morning, Sun. was daughter's birthday. I was sad, but made her a cake and DH and I ate in her absence.
Hope all is well with everyone, I have not read post for awhile either. But know that you are all in my thoughts.
Attempting to start some minor house repairs. (Painting) to start. Wish me luck.
Have a great day all. <3

don't work too hard Vera

Carole - thank you so much for all of the eagleland (and other) updates and certainly the photos. It's wonderful to see the happenings around the land and to be able to celebrate all the other nests and fledglings! We can all certainly appreciate the time and effort it takes for you to gather all of that info and pass it on to us! You Rock Girl! :ok: :Hugs: :><:

OK can't see the top of my desk :( so to work I must go.........

Heard from one brother that the other brother left this AM for Kuwait (was supposed to leave last Sat)

And first brother above - his wife is home - they can't pinpoint the tear so she'll be having 2 colonoscopies a week :'( until they can figure out the source of her problems ...... this is problem #3 - one after the other - and it's taking it's toll on their household! oh my gosh........

OK gotta give my attention to other things .......

UPDATE FROM BEV DAY , AUGUST 3, 2009

Bev has answered more of our questions. Thank you Bev for taking the time to do this on a long weekend.

#1 How is Bandit doing?

"Bandit is doing great. Getting better at standing and perching.
He has taken to perching faster than I thought he would.

He keeps asking the male with him whenever he wants food but is getting the idea he has to go to it rather than it being brought to him."

#2 How much does it cost to feed the birds at OWL?

All birds are different depending on diet.

Right now we are putting out $ 2000.00 for quail every month and a half.

Rats and mice are costing about $1500 per month

We get most fish free as well as donated game meat.

On occasion we have to buy live trout when we have Osprey in and that can get expensive.

If we have to keep an Eagle for 1 yr it cost about $1000.00 for him or her even with the free donated fish etc.

A Redtailed Hawk is about 300.00 per year.

Great Horned Owls a bit more expensive as rats cost more.

We can give all Hawks and Falcons quail.

Most Hawks will eat both quail and rats.

Falcons eat birds only in the wild, some insects grasshoppers etc.

Barn Owls eat their own weight each day for about 10 wks then slow down.

I will check our year end report but i think it was around $15000.00 to $20000.00 for food last year. That was the food for all the birds not counting what we been given as free donations.

#3 Have Mom and Dad Delta1 been around?

"Have not seen Mom or Dad . Our's here at the Delta Owl nest are gone as well.
Ralph thinks there is a fish run as it's really scarce to see eagles at all right now".

I'm glad you all are enjoying the Steve Miller Band this morning. I heard that song on our way home yesterday. We found a really cool radio station that was playing music from the 70s. :)^

Deb, I'm sending out positive thoughts for you and your family as you are struggling with so many issues.

May God Bless your brother and keep him safe.

Hoping they find the source of your SIL's illness really soon. :Hugs: :Hugs:
