eaglepedia revisited

January 28, 2007

Immature eagles have a proportionately larger wing and tail to body ratio than adults which make them more adapted for soaring. The immature easily soars in the thermals and updrafts, searching for columns of adult eagles which will lead them to food sources, mostly carrion. Adults are able to flap their shorter wings faster than the younger eagles, covering 32 miles in an hour. The adult is also more efficient in hunting live prey.

The eagle's large wings are made for soaring but can make landing and takeoff a bit difficult (as witnessed on the nests that we watch). The grace of an adult arriving into a perch takes long practice. Observing a newly fledged eagle in the air can give real appreciation as to what an adult eagle has achieved. They will normally face the wind to maneuver for a landing while an eaglet may try landing with the wind behind it only to discover that he has too much momentum to land successfully. Instead of land, he may fly on or lose his grasp and fall or may hang on but not be able to keep his balance, ending upside down like a bat!

Good morning sunshines.

I managed to put a dent in my back fender last night. . . :(

:X: Hope all of our eagles are safe in their fledging journeys. ^"^ ^"^

Sandie - a ghost :o Not all ghosts are bad. We have them here in the building I work in. The building was a hospital back in the day. I've had "experiences" with them - mostly in the room where our copier is. One likes to tug on my skirt, until I get a little freaked out and stop the copier and pick up my copy job and leave. I'm thinking it my be a child ghost looking for attention. One - or the same one also likes to shake the door to my storage room while I'm in there. (which is in the copier room too). That usually freaks me out too.

Good luck to Linda with her photos. Hoping for a blue ribbon or two for her. :X:

Also for Linda and Deb, :Hugs: Sending out hugs and lots of love.

Not sure what the weather is going to do today, rain a bit this afternoon maybe.

George the check is in the Mail. You might get it today. Mailed it yesterday.

My two Pecan Trees arrived yesterday. Now I wait for my Orange Tree.

The Panda's really seemed to enjoy their Birthday Cakes. They were incredibly beautiful.

I am so glad to hear the quaked didn't appear to be on the San Andreas Fault Line. I was worried about that. So glad to hear everyone is safe for the time being.

Sandie be careful with the ghost. They can get nasty.

Deb, Sandie won a second prize ribbon for her beautiful afgan, as well as I think a first for one of her writings. :><:

Bring pictures forward from last week:

We've had the strangest weather this summer.
The marine layer looks the same here in Ojai too.
The temps have been in the low 90's which is cool for us this time of year.
Zoey doesn't mind it at all. The second photo has Santa Cruz Island in the background.
I had to work all day both Saturday and Sunday.
So we packed our gear up early and spent the day
on the beach yesterday.

You can see Santa Cruz Island perfectly from the ferris wheel at the fair.
I hope someone brings their camera for a shot from the ferris wheel.
