That is darling Laurie! I think I remember reading about that in our local paper or at least seeing the picture with a blurb during that time of the fire! :P

Hi all...We are home...enjoyed over two weeks in Avalon...always hate to leave...many friends come to see us off which is a wonderful ending to our vacation. Lots happening in Avalon... rec ently, City Manager and City Attorney have left...another prominent leader of the city left and, with his wife, has abruptly left the island.. he was Harbor Master for many years...he and another man started Catalina Air Lines and has recently been at Two Harbors...much, much more going on but much too long a story to post. Weather couldn't have been more perfect...familiar places, faces and interesting conversations with residents always make for a stimulating trip. The IWS truck was always in it's familiar spot as I passed by.

Before I left, the sighting of the two young men on the WE nest was the latest topic on the forum. Information in the Catalina Islander was that they believe the two men were from the Boy Scout Camp. I haven't had time to read through the posts since my return so please disregard this info if it has already been posted.

My nephew and family arrived in Avalon the day we left and on Wed. my daughter will be in town on business...we gotta get our act together so we can all be there at the same time. Also, another nephew went over for the 4th of July to do up the golf cart and be in the parade and the week before we arrived my brother was there.

Looks like Bai Yun had her little cub while we were away...she always seems to do that...we go to Catalina and she has her cub!!! She's such a good mom...this is her fifth little one.

Better cut this short... glad to hear that all the furry and feathered friends are doing well but I see that we do not have number the posts that we had at one time...Facebook is the place to be now...twittering, too!!!

:}^ Thanks for all your good wishes and the candle. Special. Not much going on on the Forum. Everyon's on Facebook! I am not into the Farm thing, but hooked on Hatchlings, which Patti Karr and Joanie Seaton took care of for me while I was in the hospital. Three more weeks on the antibiotics and then hope to get out from under the side effects and really start recovering. :X: Are there any Cruzer events planned for southern CA? Please keep me in the loop. :Hugs: Vina

So, I wonder if these kids will be prosecuted? They should, boy scouts or not, they're really dumb. I wonder what would have happened had they fallen or...Wray and Superman gave them the business. :soar: :soar: I bet their mommy and daddy would sue the Catalina Conservancy, the IWS and the Boy Scouts. :<:: I hope they end up in the pokey! This still has me fired up!

Naturegal...My photos are mainly of some of the old homes, and over the years many have been demosihed to make way for larger and more modern homes....I miss the old wooden homes, but, at least I have the photos. One poor little old home is shrouded in Morning Glory vines...some years they have been beaten back to reveal an unpainted one story home with broken windows, other years the home is completey hidden. There was an old home on one of the upper terraces which recently sold and was torn down. The party that bought the property started new construction but must have run out of money as it sits as a blight on the side of the hill, just an unfinished shell, nothing inside. This is not the first time this has happened...two or three other sites in Avalon are in the same shape...out of money before they can barely get the framing done!!! I haven't mastered posting pictures yet.

Chiquita, my family had a home on the island. This was in the 60's and 70's, and those big monster houses wern't being built yet. There were all the quaint spanish and wood homes. With cute little porches. I just loved it. Approaching the island and seeing 'Hamilton Cove' is just to L.A. for me. So sad so many homes are being torn down for big ugly monsters. I live on the beach, and this happens all the time. The beach cottages are torn down for multi-million dollars 3 story boxes. :(

Summer818...Sounds like you have fond memories of Avalon. I, too, do not like looking at Hamilton Cove as we arrive. A new master plan for Avalon and Descanso is outlined in the July 5th L.A. Times all at a time when there is a steep decline in tourism and with a city budget deficit of $3 million. Water is in short supply yet Auberge Resorts of Napa Valley has been chosen to develop the hotel, condominium and homes at the Descanso location. Jack Nicklaus Cos. has been selected to develop the new 18 hole golf course...lots of water needed for that!!!..Catalina Stables have already left/forced out? as the CIC wants that land for the new golf course. There's more but will leave it at that. Approval from the City of Avalon, L.A. County Planners and the state Coastal Commission is needed, so, as one man said to me last week..."I'll believe it when I see it".

I would bet too that there has to be an environmental impact study too if not several. Here for alot of projects those can be used to tie a project up for years often to the point of it not being undertaken.

We had a major cross county freeway planned for 50 years and two townships fought tooth and nail with the proverbial NIMBY attitudes to halt the project. After concessions from the state and federal highwy folks and over 30 years of litigation the highway was finally opened in the early 90s. The concessions forced the roadway to be only 2 lanes through two towns and has cuased traffic to back up like I 10 out here at rush hour. Now these two townships are whining about the traffic, noise and other problems because they say the roadway was not built to handle the traffic.

My father had followed this project since its proposal and said that the day they open the road would be the same day he would retire. He retired 10 years earlier

Personally to me a "Shore cottage" is not one with the expensive landscaping, in ground pools, hot tubs and jsut about everything else including the kitchen sink. The Avalon i grew up at in New jersey had the small homes with a shower behind them to wash the sand and salt off when returning fromt he beach and other towns had the classic wooden cottages from the arts and crafts era and even a few Sears and Roebuck homes. Today its all full of "McMansions" on postage sized lots for beaucoup bucks
