Hi Everybody, Just as I expected, all of the Catalina Juveniles decided to leave their territories to explore the rest of the island. All at once! K98, one of the West End (WE) eaglets was all the way on the eastern part of the island this week as well as K96, one of the two Twin Rocks (TR) eaglet. K87, the other TH eaglet, has been exploring the KBRT areas in the interior and the coasts of Salta Verde on the south side of the island. Salta Verde area ![]() At the top of Salta Verde Ridge Road ![]() For the last few days I have been searching for K94, the other TR eaglet. On Monday, his radio was emitting a mortality signal and I was really, really hoping for a dropped transmitter because I didn’t want to have to search for a dead bird, not three years in a row. Looking for K94’s signal. The city of Avalon seen from the East End Road ![]() I searched for a few hours but didn’t find it o I went to Middle Ranch to feed the birds and when I returned to the area, not only was the signal was coming from a different area but it was a normal signal. I tried to walk into the bird and it took me to this beach. The area by the garbage dump on the industrial part of the city where K94’s signal was picked up last ![]() It was definitely coming from this coast but since it is so cliffy I couldn’t see it. I was considering taking out a kayak but it was getting late so I waited until next morning. On Tuesday I wasn’t even able to get a signal, much less a visual so I assume we are just dealing with a faulty radio. That, or the bird managed to sit perfectly still for 6 hours and the radio went into mortality mode for that morning. I was glad I didn’t find a dead bird and now I need to get a good signal or a visual to make sure he’s fine. Over the weekend, a friend took me out in a plane to survey the island. I picked up everybody’s signal (except for K97’s of course since that transmitter doesn’t work) The Two Harbors nest ridge seen from a plane ![]() Here’s a short video of K91 flying over the KBRT area on the East End of the island ![]() This morning I found a Bison on the “wrong” side of the island ![]() Cont... |

I have gotten good signals from K00, K90, K96 and K99 on different places of the island, and K97 has been coming back to the nest regularly and showing up on the cam so I haven’t had to radiotrack for her yet. The list of donors keeps getting larger ![]() Pimu was a bit curious so she got into the frame ![]() Isn’t she beautiful? ![]() This Friday, Pii’ ich and I have a presentation to a group of archeologist who have been working on the island for the last few weeks. I’ll have somebody take a picture of us and I’ll post it next week. I’d like to end this report with a video of three of Catalina’s wonderful wild animals: Osprey, Bald Eagle and Island Fox. Until next week, Steffani |

Wonderful update, Steffani Thank goodness the mortality signal from K94 started giving you a normal signal again. You must have breathed a huge sigh of relief, even if you didn't get a visual. Glad you were able to pick up all the juveniles' signals. The last video - the osprey's "talon stretch", K90's endless soaring, the island fox just "moving on down the road" - is precious. Thank you for such a great update. |

Wonderful update, Steffani....as always! Glad to hear that you were able to see or get signals from all of the eaglets (except K97) and that K94's mortality signal was just a transmitter malfunction. Hope you're able to get a visual on both K97 & K94 this coming week.We knew the time they eaglets would begin exploring was coming. Soon the nests will be empty as they explore further and further away. Glad we have you on the island to track them as long as they remain on the island. I smiled when I heard the familiar beeping of the transmitter on the video of K91 flying. For those that haven't had the opportunity to have an island tour yet, that's the sound the receiver makes when one of the eaglets is nearby. |

Steffani - Great update. Hope you get a visual on K-94 soon, thank goodness it's only a faulty transmitter. Beautiful osprey video and seeing K-91 soar was beautiful. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date, you are so special.

Steffani you certainly know how to keep us in suspense, my heart was in my mouth when you were explaining about K-94's transmitter. So happy to read it was not a mortality signal You certainly lead the life...flying around the Island, hiking and and kayaking and making presentations with Heidi to interesting groups, not to mention training the preparing the wingblings and all the myriad things you do in your job. Thanks for keeping us all in the loop. I happy updates

Dear Steffani, Oh, I was holding my breath when you said you got a mortality signal! Since the signal was moving again, I'm sure he's okay but I'll feel better when you get a visual. Hope he leaves the cliff-y area so you can find him. What is the KBRT area? Some more great pictures as usual... and thanks for the picture of the donor wall. I was happy to see my name. As usual, some lovely shots of Catalina. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date! /auri |
