Hi everyone- This past week, Amanda and I both returned to Santa Cruz Island to search for the eagle pairs again. We had some office work/vehicle work to catch up on, but we were able to get out in the field both on land and sea to find some bald eagles. We headed out in search of A-00 and A-16 in their territory at Cueva Valdez and found A-00 perched in the usual spot. We’ve been trying to give the eagles some free fish when we find them, in hopes that they will come down to our boat when we are trying to trap them. We managed to get A-00 to come down for our free fish, so hopefully next week when Peter comes out, we will be able to catch our first eagle and put a transmitter on him. Looking at our GPS data this week, we found that several eagles have been spending time around that coastline. Luckily for us, common dolphins also chose to pass by when we were out in the boat on the way to Painted Cave. ![]() ![]() We also found A-29 hanging out at the entrance to Painted Cave, but no other eagles were seen. ![]() Another day, Amanda and I headed out to Sauces and Christy looking for eagles out there, and we found A-37 flying along Christy Beach, and then over to Sauces where Amanda was observing. She took off inland, so we couldn’t get any pictures of her. I went to check on the Fraser pair, and found both birds perched together north of Fraser Point, on some cliffs. Cont. . . We had perfect boat weather one day, and Amanda and I headed to Christy and Sauces on the boat where we were hoping to get confirmed visuals of A-27 and A-28, but to our surprise found that A-29 was hanging out there. We put a fish out for him, thinking it was A-28, and were very surprised to see this eagle hanging out there. ![]() ![]() ![]() A-29 with fish on Christy Beach ![]() We went to check on the Pelican Harbor pair at their hang out in Chinese Harbor, but only found one member of the pair, K-26. ![]() ![]() ![]() No more exciting news to report from this week. Next week, Amanda and I will return to Santa Cruz with Peter so we can attempt to catch an eagle to attach a transmitter. |
