Ever since reading a book about the Orcas in Telegraph Cove, B.C. on Vancouver Island over 20 years ago, my dream has been to come here and see, hear, and kayak with the Orcas. This trip has been the amazing fulfillment of that dream. We flew into Victoria, and drove to northern Vancouver Island to begin our journey. We started with a half day whale watch, where we were surrounded by Orcas frolicking, especially the babies who were breaching seemingly with pure joy. Two days later we camped on Sophie's Island for two days, and kayaked with the Humpbacks and the Orcas. Eagles frequently called, flew overhead, and we even watched one feeding on a duck. We have been able to hear the songs and calls of the Orcas with hydrophones. We also saw a Black Bear along side the road. So, we have seen:
Orcas, and Eagles, and Bears, Oh, my!

Yesterday, after leaving the Orcas, we came down Island to stay with Pat and Roy. We spent the day together laughing, talking, and "doing" Nanaimo. Lunch was at the Dinghy Dock Pub on nearby Protection Island. We had to take a ferry there. We also spent the day on Eagle Watch, and found some beautiful Nanaimo Eagles. Today on to Vancouver, Victoria, and three days in the San Juan Islands ... more Orcas, and Eagles, and (maybe) Bears, Oh My!

Hello Folks ... Just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been having Regan and Randy here with us.

As you can see by the super photos that Regan has posted they are having a wonderful time here in Canada.

We also went up to Parksville and viewed the Sand Sculptures ... they don't normally have a theme but this year the Winter Olympics in Whistler in 2010 was suggested ... and those that chose to go with that theme did some amazing sculptures.

Howdy!  :}^

It's been awhile since I've been on chat....hope everyone is doing well!

I have a most unusual request, but for a good cause!

I received the following email today, which I believe to be legitimate. It came from a va.gov email address. Sounds like the sender works for the VA (Veterans Administration)

"I am currently working on a program to provide
wildlife viewing opportunities to Disabled Veterans. Do you have any documentation/testimonials about the positive
effects of viewing wildlife by individuals who may have been
sick or depressed? Thanks in advance for your timely
response as I'm presenting the program soon."

I know how much watching the eagles can be uplifting, yet it could be depressing at times. Would anyone be willing to share how watching the eagle cam or other cams has helped them while they were depressed or sick? Could you personally email me your testimonial? Or perhaps someone that you know has benefited from watching cams. I am assuming this person needs them to be able to get funding for computers, etc for the veterans. I personally think wildlife viewing is good for the soul!

Thanks for your help!

:Hugs:  to all!

moving this forward - I agree Paula

Good morning, all. Today we're celebrating . . . National Aviation Day

National Aviation Day is observed in the United States on August 19 each year to celebrate the history and development of the aviation. It coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright who, together with his brother Wilbur, made significant contributions to powered flight.

eaglepedia revisited

March 28, 2007

Eagle Hunting/Eating (part II): An eagle hunting area can range from 1,700 to 10,000 acres, depending on the availability/abundance of food. It takes a large amount of energy to hunt with possibly only one in 18 attacks being successful, so an eagle must spend a lot of time resting,

Bald eagle are fast fliers and when they go into a dive, the eagle pulls in his wings to minimize their surface area. On occasion, eagles will hunt in pairs. An eagle mantles (partially opening its wings) its food to protect it from being stolen or seen by other eagles. The can east 1 pound of fish in around 4 minutes, holding the prey with one foot while tearing off bites with its beak. The eagle will steal food from other eagles as well as other birds. Chasing them is usually enough to persuade it to drop its prey!
