eaglepedia revisited

June 20, 2007

Feeding Behaviors - Bald eagles will watch other eagles so that they can discover food sources. Juveniles will follow the older birds from the winter roosts to hunting/scavenging locations, learning the skills to survive. Many eagles will very quickly surround carrion discovered by one eagle. Eagles use each other to spot prey, or carrion sources, a benefit of having outstanding vision. One eagle can see another eagle soaring in the sky from up to 2 miles away! Eagles may also use crows/ravens to locate food sources. Eagles will leave their night roosts about 1/2 hour before sunrise, arriving at their hunting perches in the feeding areas. For about an hour after sunrise they fish and feed heavily. When full they will spend most of the day perching in trees, conserving their energy. They may take flight again if assured of getting food as a reward for their energy expended.

Yes, summer is winding down. In fact up at the lake last week, we noticed that the deciduous trees were already starting to turn. Since most of the forest was ponderosa pine with a few spruce, the scattered patches of yellow are quite dramatic.
