Hello everyone, I’ve been tracking the four youngsters who remain on the island and they keep moving around, randomly visiting their original territories. I have tried to get a visual of K97, the remaining WE juvenile, but since her transmitters doesn’t work, I’ve had the hardest time finding her. I hope she’s still on the island and doing alright. K87, K91 and K99 keep exploring the island. Here are a few placed where they taken me. ![]() Church Rock, by Pinnacle Rock area ![]() A beach by the East End old lighthouse between Seal Rocks and Pinnacle Rock territories. ![]() One of the many, many red-tailed haws I see every day. ![]() The Palos Verdes Peninsula ![]() The smoke seen from Catalina Island. The harbor right below is Emerald Bay. ![]() The smoke clouds over LA ![]() The West End nest after the 2009 breeding season and after the two young men walked over it. ![]() Wray, the WE female, being dive-bombed by gulls. ![]() K88, one of the two Twin Rocks chicks from 2008, was spotted recently still at Baker Beach north of Florence, Oregon. I meant to post it on a previous update but somehow I forgot. This particular bird had been spending a lot of time in OR, he came back to the island to “drop” his transmitter and make us worry about him probably being dead, and flew back to Oregon. We hope he returns again soon, find a mate on the island and form a new breeding pair. In other news: an update on the West End nest intruders. They have been charged with misdemeanors through the city, and for the federal offense, USFWS gave them several hours of community work in the form of educational presentations. They have to prepare a power point presentation and talk about the bald eagle program, the island fox program, the island’s ecology, its native and invasive plants, island regulations, etc. They young men met with me to talk about the eagle program and with Conservancy biologists and botanists to find out about the rest. They will present this at their own camp and several other campgrounds on the island. I’ll leave you with another beautiful sunset over Middle Canyon ![]() Until next week, Steffani |

Thanks Steffani ... the youngsters are sure taking you to some beautiful spots ... super photos. Like you I hope that K-97 is well ... such a pity her transmitter does not work. Thanks too for the update on the WE intruders. Let's hope that through this Community work ... and all the research they had to do on the various projects, for their power point presentation ... that this has educated them too! If you wanted to ... would you be able to attend one of their presentations? |

Steffani - Great update and beautiful photos. These youngsters are sure keeping you busy, too bad about K-97's transmitter. I'm really happy that the intruders have to give back something to the community and perhaps now they will have a greater understanding and respect for the wildlife on the island and elsewhere. |

Steffani, thank you so much for your great update. I sure hope you can get a visual on the other WE eaglet. I'm so glad these kids will learn their lesson, and never trample across an eagles nest. I say make them work on the island during a heatwave, that'll teach them! Thank you again, for all your hard work! |

Steff, great update and beautiful shots of the island in search of our wandering juveniles. How incredibly considerate of K88 to drop his transmitter off for you guys before heading back to Oregon. It's interesting you should mention the WE intruders..........I was just wondering what the outcome was concerning their nest invasion. Hopefully they will realize through their community service the danger their stunt posed to the welfare of our WE Bald Eagles. I pray their community service will educate not only the public, but them, and from it create two more stewards of wildlife.

Dear Steffani, Great photos-- especially the one of that amazing pyro-cumulus cloud that was over us here on the mainland on Monday. You guys probably have the cleanest air in L.A. county this week. It is NASTY over here in town! Thanks for the update on 88. Those birds DO get around, don't they? Alway enjoy your reports! I look forward to Wednesdays! /aurli |

Those juvies are hard to keep up with, huh Steff? Thanks for giving it the old college try and also thank you for the update on the WE intruders. I am so glad they are being "educated" as to the error of their ways! |

Great update, Steffani. Thanks for all you do. I am glad that the intruders will have to think a lot about what they did and the potential damage they could have caused. |

STEFFANI -- WONDERFUL NEWS ABOUT K88 So glad those young men were found and are now being EDUCATED AND MUST DO COMMUNITY SERVICE. Who knows, after all they are learning, they could take interest in becoming a biologist or other field in working with nature some day. Even if they learn an appreciation for Nature, it will be a victory. |

Thanks for the report, Steffani. They certainly keep you jumping all over the island, don't they? Hope you're able to get a visual of K97. Any idea why her transmitter isn't working? Or is it just one of those things? I too hope that the education and community service will help them to respect wildlife everywhere, and realize the damage they could have caused. As Pat asked, is there any chance you'll be able to watch one of their presentations? |

It is always a treat to read your updates Since I was particularly incensed at those two intruders in the WE Nest, I'm glad to read they have to do some community outreach..how old are those two anyway? I am shocked that they are members of a Boy Scout Troop ![]() Great to see the skies are relatively clear of the smoke from the fires and the water looks so beautifully blue around the islands and those juvies are sticking close to home ![]() Poor Wray...give her a break already...maybe she needs to leave a seagull wing or two on her nest so they will stay away

Thanks for all the news, Steffani! Great to hear about K88 in Oregon....and I'm surprised to learn the young intruders were Boy Scouts. Hopefully, the discipline imposed upon them will do the trick and they'll learn to respect nature in addition to crawling all over it. I think their projects will teach them about respect for the bigger picture. :soar: :soar:

I hope K-97/Joy is doing alright too. Maybe she will show herself this week Those juveniles are surely keeping you busy running about the island! Thanks for all the beautiful pictures. I wonder if K-88 has been spotted any further north of Baker Beach in the past? That is some trip he has undertaken...and twice yet!!! Am so glad to hear that the West End intruders have been identified and charged. I hope their attitude is positive and that they have learned a life lesson here. We can only hope that through the educational efforts of all those involved they will take home a new respect for our planet and its wildlife. Thanks again Steffani. Enjoy the nice long weekend ahead! |
