Good morning Peep's.

George I hope you are feeling better today then you have in a while. The I.P. will also keep you bleeding so you certainly do not want to do that. Same with ASA.

Hope Peetie is having a safe relaxing vacation.

Have a very hectic stressful schedule today in the Office. Ken Mom is in all afternoon for a lot of major work. Guess I'll have to block some time out so I can get mine taken care of too.

Please keep 2 y/o Grace in your prayers today as she undergoes surgery for holes in her heart.

Topa, love the graphic with the weather report!

Our zoo’s elephant had a baby Wednesday. The mother, Rosie, was born here 16 years ago. The baby is a female. She weighed 300 pounds at birth and stands 3 feet tall! No photo of the baby yet.

Newspaper Carrier Day

Posted Image

Newspaper Carrier Day is celebrated in the US and honors Barney Flaherty, the first newspaper carrier (or paperboy) hired in 1833, as well as all current newspaper carriers. It is celebrated on September 4, the anniversary of Flaherty's hiring by the New York Sun. Barney was 10 at the time.

When I was in junior high, I delivered our local paper. It only came out on Thursdays (in the afternoon), so it wasn't that difficult. The hard part was getting people to pay! If I remember, it was $1.00 every 3 month.

Just heard radio news report that America's First Zoo, The Philadelphia Zoo, has a rare Summatran Orangatang (sp) that is to give birth this october making her the third due around the same time here. Guess somebody got the gorilla his dreams.

Wish we stil had elephants here at the philly zoo. However, despite the public outcry, the last remaining elephants were shipped to the Pittsburgh Zoo last spring. Unlike most major zoos like ours, the philly zoo isnt on a large parcel of land as its right in the middle of the city. They wanted to have a larger enclosure for the elephants but they were unable to find sufficent funding at this time to build them a more modern and comfortable home. Hopefully they will be able to bring back some elephants if they can get a benefactor to give them enough funding :X:

I really should make a return trip to the zoo but i fear some men with nets may take me back to the ape house thinking i had escaped rofl

As for my teeth, I survived last night with no problems. No bleeding or seepage :><: and the pain wasnt that bad. However this am my blood sugar was rather low at 60mg/dl. I was going to just dine on oatmeal. Given the low sugar, i decided to do a test and managed to eat french toast with a couple strips of bacon with no problems. However, i am not going to risk it and will continue to consume relatively softer items for a few days.

I want to be able to return to my second job as taste tester in the quality control department of the Peanut Brittle and Salt water taffy company after all :P rofl

What a fantastic weekend for camping out.
I need to work on my camera setting to try to photo the texture of the moon.
I'm so glad I got up early.
Catm did you say this is the blue corn moon?

The corn moon. (I wish it was blue corn!) This full moon's name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. When I lived in Illinois, we always had a few rows of corn in the garden - none of it ever made it to September. LOL Nothing like fresh corn!

When I was in junior high, I delivered our local paper.  It only came out on Thursdays (in the afternoon), so it wasn't that difficult.  The hard part was getting people to pay!  If I remember, it was $1.00 every 3 month.

Ah, i too was a paper boy until i stumbled upon a better and more profitable enterprise when i was that age.

I had one of those huge baskets on my bike and would too deliver the weekly paper on thursday mornings! I lied about my age when i got the job and told them i was 12 and was really 10.

However, after one year i saw a bag containing ad circulars which asked for those interested in delivering them on the weekends the opportunity. This was where my mind concluded the benefits of not having to get up early before school on thursdays was a good thing. I also found out it paid more for what was the same route area as the paper. Plus i didnt have to go "Collect" for the newspapers. It was always my luck that the person who owed wasnt home and i would have to make several return trips to try to get the money due to the paper. It was a godsend that i didnt have to go collect and only just had to deliver the ads. Well, there was one minor time consuming task. Each carrier had to put the ads into the plastic bags. I got so good i could stuff 100 single sheet ads into bags in about 5 minutes and the average route that i did had about 400 homes. OF course a route size would vary depending on how close the homes were to each other. As would the rate we charged advertisers for the distribution of thier ads. Less for a denser built up neighborhood and more for the more open suburban areas.

Then, i rationalized how many weekends out of 52 does one have rain friday thru sunday and concluded that i would not have to go out at all in the rain since it wasnt freuqent to have three days of rain and even less frequent those three day periods would be on a weekend.

I moved up in the company from there and did two or three routesr right in my own neighborhood which only required me to walk up and down each side of the streets and hang a bag of circular(s) on the doorknob. The owner liked me and would recruit me for other projects when we started to cover other new areas and he would take us up as a crew to do the first deliveries to a new area.

I later ,after getting my license, started to supervise other routes and carriers and gradually moved up to distribution manager and then into sales and doing audits of the carriers to make sure they were doing thier job. When the boss decided to retire i had worked my way up to a partnership. I learned more about running a business there from a hands on approach than i could at college. This partnership was very profitable and also paid for my undergraduate degree in full from The George Washington University in DC that my father thought was TOO expensive. (he wanted me to go to Temple here instead and claimed GWU was "in a bad neighborhood. He was totally wrong, I never got mugged in DC but i sure got pistol whipped at Temple and i still remind him of that to this day.)

My point is that the good ole paper boy/girl learns alot of skills for their future such as people skills, how to keep thier accounts up to date and even time management skills. However here in philly i am not sure there are paper routes for kids. I do see the Philadelphia Inquirer and NY Times being delivered by audlts from their cars early in the morning and they cover alot more area than the typical paper boy route that we had as kids. It is sort of ashame that this sort of opportunity is no longer around for kids
