:'( :'( I have such a heavy heart right now. My friend just called me to tell me her SIL just passed away from a heart attack. Her daughter is the one recently diagnosed with Alzheimers. What a sad event for her. They don't know what to do or how this will affect her. I'm so very sad..... :'(

Yesterday, a dear friend passed away in his sleep, a heart attack! He was a wonderful man, and I'm really going to miss him. :'(

I've been pretty scarce, my work load has doubled, but I think of you all often, and will hopefully be able to chat more with all of you soon! :}^

Happy Labor Day Weekend to all the Cruzers!

Linda, there were 3 circus elephants found in a trailer at a local motel. One died because of the heat in the trailer. The other 2 were taken to our zoo. The older of the two was a carrier of salmonella. They were both kept separate from our zoo's elephants. I know that they were both treated at the zoo, but the story fell out of the news and I never heard any more.

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( I just love elephants, and any abuse to them or any animal just breaks my heart. Maybe the keepers, should be left in a hot trailer and see how they do. Jerks.

I have to agree with you, Summer. I remember the night those elephants were found at the local hotel. By chance, the local biopark society was having their annual meeting at that hotel the same night. It was summertime and very hot as I recall.

As a rule, I hate to see animals in circuses, or any performing animals really.

Here is an account posted on Sunday August 2nd by wildorcaimages of how she went to the pick up the injured osprey to transport it to O.W.L. where it was rehabilitated before it's release....

"I was having my shower this morning at around 7.40 am when the phone rang, and it was Bev. She asked me if I was able to drive to Terminal 2 of the Vancouver Airport and pick up a Goshawk that was coming in with Westcoast Air in 10 min.....

.... I grabbed a couple of towels, my larger cat carrier, my falconry glove and my thin little barn owl gloves, which is all I have at home. Got lost at first because Westcoast Air is actually at the Floatplane terminal. There the kennel with the bird was waiting right in the little check in hall. The lady of WildArc needed it back so I had to transfer the bird.

Something didn't look right about this bird being a Goshawk, but I never thought much of it.... but just thought of the task at hand. How to transfer the bird safely, for both of us. I went into the washroom, as it was a smaller space and if it got out it wouldn't go far.

When I opened the door, red eyes looked at me and a black beak was gleaming. I quickly shielded my face with my falconry glove on the left hand and grabbed white legs with black talons with my right. The bird was very cooperative.... but it was tough to get those huge wings tucked in safely in the small cat kennel it was in, but I managed and got the transfer done in about 20 seconds. Came out of the washroom, let the people have a quick peak and went to the car. As I was driving along, it occured to me, what had been blatantly obvious but I just hadn't thought about...... the bird is a female young Osprey, not a Goshawk. I phoned Bev and let her know.

Got the bird to O.W.L. got to hold it during its examination.......an eagle had tried to make it a meal, it has puncture wounds in his neck and chest area, so it was put on Antibiotics right away and put in a clean cage with a large trout."

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-Eagle-Sister...s/dp/0142301329

I found this children's book today at a 'Gooodwill' store in Ventura.. although there is much controversary over whether Chief Seattle actually spoke the words in the book in the 1850s .. it is still a best seller and the message is loud and clear.. keep the earth clean... it mentions losing our eagles in the future.. which nearly came true... I thought of Jeanne because of the paintings/illustrations... which are beautiful... I noticed Amazon has it listed with various prices... Just thought I would share...
