Thanks Cat.. My Macro lens only focuses on a part of the bee, not the whole thing, so I was going for the wing pattern... so head is a little fuzzy...the little purple arrows were interesting too... |

That is the main problem with macro! Whenever one is focusing at the near end of the focusing range, depth of field is very very shallow. Even more so as the focal length of the lens increases. For example, suppose that you could focus both the nikon 60 and 105mm micr nikkor lenses at ,for the sake of argument, 12 inches. You will have a narror range in front and behind the focal distance in focus with the 105 than you will with the 60mm. This is where apeture priority comes in handy. If you were shooting at f5.6 and the object you want tack sharp wasnt, you could select f 11 or 16 or more to increase the area in focus in your frame. You could have to boost up the ISO to be able to get an acceptable shutter speed to go with that selected Fstop so that you can shoot hand held which is where the trade off between depth of field and "digital noise" at the higher iso comes about. (noise=what we film shooters would call "grain" ) Also another tip. Some digital slr bodies have a depth of field preview button that one can depress which will stop the lens down for the shooter to see what is then in focus before you release the shutter. (on the nikons such as my d80 and d90 this is the button at to the right of the lens by the mount flange at roughly the 7 o'clock position) This is what the lens does automatically when you release the shutter. This allows us to avoid a darkend viewfinder so we can frame the shots instead of looking through at the f stop we are shooting at. This depth of field preview feature i use all the time when i am doing macro shots at short subject to camera focusing distances because the focus is even more critical due to the more narrow depth of field. This is why Apeture priority auto exposure is a godsend for macro shooting because you can select the F stop to give you more or less depth of field. For those who use a DSLR, you can try this and see how you can control your depth of field. I know i may be preaching to the choir but there are some who never bother to use the shutter S (for nikon TV for canon) or the apeture (A for nikon AV for canon) auto exposure modes and only use the P for program mode. They never realize how much thier camera will do and often dont learn even the basics of exposure and depth of field and how they are interrelated. My intention here is not to "dis" anyones ability but to provide a learning experi.ment to help them enjoy the art even more. I leica the Bee shot, the purple bloom is interesting. I was trying to shoot bees this afternoon around a similar colored "indian paint brush" plant today to no avail. they are not that easy to shoot when they are flying from bloom to bloom and wont stay put for you ![]() I can practically count the pollen collecting hairs on the bee's little legs which makes the shot interesting! Normally who would even look and notice those and the intricate beauty of nature!!

Linda, I love, love, love your bee! Reminds me of a good friend, huh? A woman came into Jenny Craig last night while I was there, she lives in upper Ojai, said it was 107! Keep cool, and stand in front of that vent in your living room!

Thanks guys, Bruce my friend was just the best, with a heart of gold. Jann, Dave better get those thermals out, it's almost an artic blast at 103! Acutally, here on the beach, it's downright hot. In the upper 80's with a ton of humidity. Hang in there everyone, and have a great Labor Day Weekend. I've got to get a couple of reports done before I can get outta here. See you sometime over the weekend. |
