love glo and dex photo - guess where I am - Karen - merger flyby - good job on adding an avatar! topa - love the tennis photo - who knows!..... Linda - sorry for your loss oh love the squiggle photos ..... Penny wonderful photos of the release - how fitting for today.... :soar: we are home from a day outside - beautiful weather - no humidity - not hot! wonderful! we went a little east of us today and many times (especially checking on the osprey) we've passed an old landfill site that has been turned into a wonderful park - but never stopped Today our caching took us there!there are great trails to the top where there are a couple of small lakes with turtles and ducks and if you can't walk it, you can arrange for the rangers to take you around in a 6 -8 passenger golf cart! they will even drop you and pick you up at the fishing pier! just awesome place! AND not only did we find the caches there - but behind the ranger's station, there was an osprey perched on a nesting stand. Wondering if it was juvie or parent WHEN a parent swooped by and of course the "feed me" calling began - no fish for you! but parent swung by again and more calling - parent flew off but we couldn't see him anymore. watched junior for a bit and then headed out on our hike to the top of the "dump"! Well we get to the top and there was the parent on the other side hovering - and sure enough, before we could get the camera ready - straight into a dive BUT a passing gull kind of interrupted the plunge and the osprey didn't get the So off he flew and eventually we lost site of him! AWESOME!Will try to pull the photo together yet today or in next couple of days! whew! --------------------------------- where we went today: Norman J. Levy Overlook Park and Preserve This unique park, once a landfill, has been transformed into an environmental treasure. The conversion of the former Merrick Landfill into the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve not only epitomizes the town's commitment to environmental conservation, but saved Hempstead Town taxpayers more than $42 million. The innovative $15 million park plan is substantially less expensive than the $57 million capping and closure plan originally required of the town by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Located beside the Meadowbrook a fresh water stream enters into Merrick Bay. The park has a windmill that circulates water of two man made ponds at the top of the 150 foot hill that made up the landfill. The top of the hill has been planted with wild flowers such as Cone Flowers. The hill overlooks the bay and marshes and offers a spectacular view of the South Shore Estuary. Several miles of trails and a 500 foot fishing pier offer good bird watching. The park provides a jitney to transport physically challenged and elderly visitors upon request. Wading birds can be seen on the salt marsh. Waterfowl use the bay and can be seen from the fishing pier. Barn owl hunt over the park around dusk. Usually seen coming out of the nearby refuse transfer station. This is also a good spot to see Osprey. Look for many American Goldfinch on the wildflower seed heads in late summer and fall. |

Going out in a little while for the evening. Wishing all a good night sleep. Those that have to work tomorrow be all that you can be. Those who are still off, myself included in that, will be doing laundry and getting ready for work Wednesday. Tonight was reading about everyone's Tour's in the past years, and trying to absorb it all. So much to see! I'm sure I will have questions needing advice as next year approaches, and I come out to the West Coast. |

Nice barrel George....I'd go for it. Looks in pretty good condition too. I'm sure you were using english when you told us what you bought but the only thing I understood for sure was the $31 and taking you to the poor house and Amazon. Oh, and batteries. Oh, not to forget the game and Oct 1. The rest George my DH graduated from Penn medical school. Hypnosis school took me one year to complete. Then I got specialized training in smoking cessation. That took an awsome amount of energy and time. I'd love to do it again. Just not pay for it.....expensive!!! Everytime I help someone stop smoking I have the greatest sence of satisfaction. I'm giving them an extended life. Deb I wish they had done something like that for our landfill. It is a pretty green area but it would have been magnificent with the same idea as there. I'd love to take Cat fishing there!!! woo hoo!!! But we'd have to have your brother's vehicle to drive ourselves up there. |

All I can say is WOW Deb That reminded me that Bette Midler was the catalyst behind cleaning up another park in NYC a few years ago of all the discarded tires and garbage and turning it into a beautiful place to be.

We've had the hot tub for a few months. It's used but we don't care  The people that had it were having their daughter's wedding reception in their yard and they just wanted it gone so it was FREE! Jim made the benches after everything else was done. Kris and Jesse are going to make cushions. Just waiting on the foam that I had to order. Yeah, I have a pretty handy family sometimes  I forgot to mention also that Jim bought 2 bamboo shades that roll down on the long open side so that we can block out the sun even more if we need to. It is so nice! |

we have a few other landfills that the same thing should be done to - you might even be able to see one in the photos in slideshow - it's close by - looking towards NYC - another is way out east and actually can be seen from atop of this one! |
