Hello everyone,

I will start with the bad news and move on to better ones.

Last Wednesday evening I had a call from the Harbor Patrol letting me know a boater had seen a dead eagle floating off the shore of White’s Landing, on the channel side of the island. At that point we didn’t have identification but they remembered seeing a 9 on the wing marker. Moments later, I got another call from one of the coast rangers letting me know he was bringing me a dead eagle he had picked up from the water and this time we had a confirmed ID, it was K99. I made some room in my freezer and store it there.

It is hard to have to, not only hear about another one of the youngsters dying but, actually hold its body… knowing that just a few months ago I was holding the same bird in my arms and it was brimming with life.

I was still a little concerned about that one first phone call I received because they weren’t sure if they had seen a 99 on the bird, they were actually thinking it was a 93, and like many of you know, we have a K93 on the island; it’s the Middle Ranch male. So, I have been looking for that bird too but since he’s an adult and has no transmitter I didn’t know how long it was going to be until I confirmed he was fine. Fortunately, I spotted him perched near Haypress reservoir; actually just hours later after I had spotted K87, one of the TH chicks, perched on the exact same location. It’s not like we are running out of perching spots on the island or anything… the birds apparently just like that spot!
I wonder if K93 came over and chased poor K87 out of the area and took over his perch.
Here’s a video of the two birds and the area where I found them.

Last week I also spotted K91 at Salta Verde.

The young eagles have been spending quite some time in this area. Pretty much all of this years juveniles ended up visiting this beach at some point and K91 and K87 visit it regularly.
See if you can spot the juvenile.

I also made a short video of K91. He looked like he had just gone swimming, maybe he’s starting to learn the art of fishing.

A couple of days ago I saw both K91 and K87 soaring together on the burnt area by Haypress Reservoir. I was very far away but I think you can see at least one of them flying over the ridge.

I have looked for K97 but without a functioning transmitter, there’s very little chance to find her since she must have left her territory by now. I’ll keep looking for sure.

Looking for the eagles I came across an osprey that must have been fishing at the reservoir and got a picture and a short video too.

I would also like to show a video of our lovely Pimu during one of her feedings. She’s such a character, she has so much personality (sometimes too much) and I never really know what to expect when I see her. She either gets really excited about seeing me in there and begs for food or she flat out ignores me.

I’ll say good-bye with a picture of some spectacular clouds of the Catalina sky.

Let’s hope this is the end of delivering bad news, at least for this season.

Thanks for the update. While the sad news is hard to hear, it is part of life.

I agree with Deb, I don't know how you see the eagles when they are so far away! I have trouble finding them even after you have circled them!

Oh Noooooo, not another one :'( :'( :'(

How tragic and how upsetting for you especially Steffani
:( I am so relieved you found K-93 so soon afterwards to put your mind at ease about another possible mortality.

K-87 looked like he might be eyeing that bison herd...steak anyone? :D

K-91 looks very regal just perched there surveying his domain. He seems to be enjoying the :*: sea and the waves.

Did the egret catch anything????

The joy of watching Pimu talking to you and showing off her 'prize' after she retrieved it made your 'bad' news a bit easier to bear :<S><: . Does she ever try to catch her own live >)): in her pool?
I think Pat had a video of her doing that once. :)^

Thank you for making your sad news a bit less devastating for all of us. :Hugs: Artsy

Steffani :<S><: - Once again sad news about K-99, it must be so difficult to receive this news, my heart goes out to you. :Hugs:

On a better note, wonderful news about K-91 and K-87 flying together and seeing K-93.

Pimu really is a character and knows just how to get you to give her the >>: . Her enclosure looks so lush and green and hearing the water running is so nice.

Thanks for your update with the photos and videos, we so appreciate all you do to keep us informed.

K-99 :candle: :^^^:

Thanks for the update, Steff. So sorry to hear we lost another juvenile. :'( As hard as it is on us, it's got to be so much harder on you. You not only have to handle it, but you have to tell us about it too.

Glad K93 is okay and didn't make you wait long to know he was okay!

Loved your videos, as always. Pimu is such a character and really seems to have bonded with you.

RIP K99 :candle:

Despite the bad news, your updates are always welcome. And I loved the video of Pimu. She really is a character.

Oh Steffani, I often envy you your job, but not when it's like this. :( It must hurt so much to hold another of our lost eaglets in your arms.

I'm glad that you had sightings of K87 & K91 to temper the sadness. Thank you for all you do for our eagles....

Steffanie I could hear the sadness in your voice & heart as you told us about K-99 today. Try to remember even though we have lost some, there are still many others that have survived. You make that possible for them, and we thank you from the bottom of our great-full hearts.

STEFFANI :Hugs: Oh so sorry that PR K99 has not survived. I can only imagine how it hurts you when this happens and a deceased juvie is brought to you or found by you. We all understand it is Nature and these beautiful juvies have a very risky year or so ahead of them.

I am glad you have PIMU and PII'ICH to see every day to help ease your sadness, when these things happen. Beautiful Pimu indeed and her own personality. <3

Keeping my :X: for the rest of the 2009 Class, as we all are.
