eaglepedia revisited

December 9, 2007

Bald eagles are primarily fish eaters. They can catch fish 6-12 inches under the surface, and they often go for dead or floating fish. Bald eagles hunt mostly in the early morning, and sometimes again in late afternoon. They will occasionally hunt cooperatively when hunting mammals. Bald eagles use several methods to catch prey, including swooping from a perch or while in flight and wading from shore into the water and grabbing fish with bill or talons. While much of the bald eagle's diet consists of fish, they will also eat ducks, rabbits, herons, squirrels, opossums and carrion. Almost 90% of the salmon eaten by eagles is carrion, often stolen from other birds such as osprey or immature eagles. Eagles are successful about 10% of the time when chasing mammals, and 70-80% when fishing. An adult bald eagle can consume one pound of fish in less than four minutes! They can lift 1⁄2 of their own weight, and carry 1⁄3 of their own weight.

Bald eagles are a very important part of the environment. By eating dead animal matter, they help with nature's clean-up process. Bald eagles are also hunters, so they keep animal populations strong. They do this by killing weak, old, and slower animals, leaving only the healthiest to survive.

and we use it when we bury small critters (the girls and I)..

Do you pass the stick to each other while saying a blessing?
I've been to Chumash ceremonies and that's what they do.

Those owl pictures look like it might be light outside, but I lightened them in Picassa.. it was pretty dark still.. flash just gives me lots of red eye....and when I remove the red eye, I am left with two dark circles... would rather have the red...

Like a missile it came, out of the sky;
we don't understand it, we just don't know why.
But in one beat of a heart, many lives were taken,
and down deep in our hearts, our souls were shaken.

And so a tear fell from the Great Eagle's eye,
but America's spirit will never die.
For our Great Eagle's been through it before,
and the terrorists will learn, again it will soar.

Cause the eagle has claws, that are solid as steel;
for it stands for the justice, that is sacred and real.
So like the strength of an eagle, let's spread our wings and fly,
so the memory of those taken will not ever die.

The girls hold the stick or wave it back and forth over the 'grave'.. usually a bird or chicken or whatever.. to bring good spirits... my DH carved the stick while we were at Convict three years ago and we cooked up the idea then...

The one way in humans and in pets is to arrange it so that your flash is not at eye level to the subject. This can be done either by bouncing the flash or using a flash bracket which holds the flash away from the lens normally to one side of the camera body. I think also you can diffuse the light from the flash somewhat by ,for the terminally frugal such as me, placing a white tissue over the flash head.

Last time i was at a party i shot a group of friends which gave them all red eye. Of course it could also have been because they had too much IP but ..even so thats a great excuse to use. "No i wasnt drunk, thats red eye from the flash!" rofl

One more, this one with flash.. but the cats were actually helping me out here with him looking down at one of them.. no eye reflection... I actually learned this morning that when slightly pressing down I can see if there is a red eye reflection before taking the picture... when I don't see the the red, I snap. Discovered this too late for todays pictures.. I'm going to try the white tissue thing George....

Here's a picture of the flag we're flying today with the special 911 tribute. It's actually an add-on strip made of the same material as the flag and attached with a grommet on the left.
