We had so much fun with the collage Deb shared earlier in the week, I started playing with pictures from the past two years and came up with something to keep ya'll busy (and out of trouble?) for the weekend.

Hey Wrightflyer my DH and I were right on the flight line when Voyager landed. He was on the "crew" as an assistant flight surgeon. It was an amazing flight and being on the "in crowd" was amazing. The Flight controlller spoke at my District President installation of BPW. I have their book too. Jeana was a real wonderful woman loved and rode horses all the time...Dick was rather arrogant if you ask me! We were there from the beginning of the test flights to those frightening last moments when we wondered if they had enough gas to get back.

Sandie - OMG! It is a small world after all. What I remember. . . . . :D

I went with a friend and her husband. We left at something like three in the morning for Edwards. When we arrived, they directed us on to the dry lake bed with flashlights - it was pitch dark! Couldn't see a thing, didn't know where we were or where we were going... just followed the flashlights.

When the first signs of daylight came, we got out of the car (we slept a while after parking) and looked around. We were about six feet from the flight line - and behind us and to both sides, a sea of cars.

I remember the people around us had two way radios or something - and we could hear the conversations between Voyager and base. We knew there could be a problem. The sky was amazing just before the sun came up - really beautiful!

Everyone knew they were close, and were straining our eyes to catch a first look at Voyager and her chase planes. Then finally, a dot.... no several dots appearing in the sky.

The croud literally all had tears in their eyes as we listened to the radios. When they landed, you could probably hear the shouts and cheers in L.A. :'( :D <3

I got a few photos. However, this was before digital cameras. The photos are probably at home somewhere in my photos. Got a great photo of the chewed up wing tip. Why didn't they have a couple of motorcycles escorting the plane before take off??? They were talking about doing something to keep the heavy wings - which were full of fuel - from dragging on the ground at take off. They were sooooo lucky that the plane even got aloft! What were they thinking!?!?! :o It could have been disasterous in the beginning.

Anyway, an amazing experience I will never forget.

Edited: Forgot to mention... Voyager took off on December 19th 1986 and landed nine days, 3 minutes and 44 seconds later. At work, I had a big bulletin board area near my desk where I posted a world map. I made little cut out graphics of Voyager in red and green (after all, it was Christmas almost!) I kept track of where Voyager was on this map by placing little red and green Voyagers at their current positions (I think I updated it a couple times per day). Everyone in the office came and checked the map and followed the flight with me!

The geese have been flying South though and last evening hundreds went overhead flying low just before it got dark. Wish we had DH's new camera for that opportunity but it will be here on Monday :D

Wrightflyer....Amazing isn't it? I can did out some pictures if you'd like. Be interesting if you see yourself? Tons of people and cold as could get. I was freeaing. We had one of those radios and people were huddled around us to listen. I think one of the news media people were sticking pretty close. I do remember the take off was horrifying. Did you know they had to plan when and where they flew depending on bugs collecting on the leading edge of the wing that would impact drag?
