Voyager was hangered in #77 in Mojave. It would only fit in the hanger sideways. Bruce Rutan would get up before ohdarkthirty and report on what the weather was like. The wings would flap before the plane ever lifted off. Burt Rutan sketched the idea of the plane on a napkin in on of the restaurants. Mom and Pop Rutan sold Tshirts to help get the $$$'s to make the idea happen. Jeana and Burt had a "thing" until they took that flight. I guess Dick had difficulty letting go of control. They had a lot of trials and tribulations to collect money. PR people sent them to a lot of places to get the help needed to support them. At one point they considered taking off from Las Vegas until they found out they would have to take off from Cesars Palace PARKING LOT!!!! They had a black cat called Magnamite. The first one would jump in any vehicle and go for a ride. It disappeared and they got another black cat. It used to sleep with it's feet straight up in the air for hours and hours. At one point everyone was feeding it and it got huge. Burt got so upset he ordered no one but him feed the cat. He was so obsessed with weight concerns it bothered him seeing the cat so fat. It talked to everyone....meowing constantly. Burt was the consumate engineer. He was kind enough with everyone but didn't like the spotlight. On it's first test flights Jeana flew chase and so did Mike Melvill and on June 22, 1984 it flew the first flight. Oil was spewing out the front engine. Dick cut the front engine and flew on the smaller back engine to land. Burt just said that's why we have two engines and kept working in the hanger. Dick was just glad to still be alive! The wings and the nose pitched up at the same time. This was not a normal thing for an airplane. The plane flew similar to a sailboat. Dick made it a rule to never look at the wings. Since the fuel was in the hallow wings the fuel did a lot of sloshing. They flew it to Oshkosh but had to land in Kansas first. Every drop of rain on the canard was like hitting it with a rock. They learned they needed radar to avoid storms. They needed to reconfigure the interior cause Jeana flew the whole way on her elbows and stomach and they were thrown all around the inside of the plane. They also needed more lift which meant oxygen. But at least they made it. Leaving Oskosh was a tremendous lesson. The wing tips would go up and the wing roots would go down pulling the whole plane down. (This plane was a death trap. I don't know how they lived) Dick admitted he was afraid of the plane. The cockpit was 7 1/2 x 2x2 it was a flying phone booth with the seat on the right instead of the left. Not easy to get into much less fly. They experminted with bananas to simulate bowel movements. But when push came to shove the "real" thing didn't work and literally they were afraid the $*&# would hit the fan when dropped out of the plane. They put 9,700 pounds of fuel in the airplane and the night before they laid the wings on folding beds with foam rubber. The frost was getting really bad and a bunch of volunteers put bed sheets all over the plane. When they released the wings fuel began leaking out the wings and the ground crew held their fingers in the wing tips until they took off. They were carrying 400 more pounds of fuel than Burt had recommended. Margaret Garner in Lancaster saw the wingtip fall from Voyager that day and returned it to Hanger 77. It was the most amazing thing to witness those wings flapping and everyone held their breath around me. I took the above from the book Voyager. Dan Card the op's manager's wife was pregnant. She delivered Ryan Beachler Card on December 3, 1987. I'll try to pull out the pictures I have. |

Jann I believe that is where the flight is originating from. They will be flying the puppies for a week. The guy is donating all the time and his plane and fuel I believe. These dogs would have been killed.
I could not SEE Bernie!!! I didn't know we could click on each picture to make it bigger...Jann you are a wizard. Nice write up Wrightflyer!!! I was mad at Dick Ruttan and I thought it grandstanding to do another fly by and dip his wings when we were chewing off our fingers over the apparent fuel shortage and thinking they would have to end the flight over the Mexico ocean. When Dick and Jeana did not get down from the plane right away I was worried. I didn't think about them being in such a cramped environment. They had "no legs" to use to get out with!!! |

I really enjoyed all the Voyager material – thanks, Marti and Sandie. I love the collage even though I only recognize a few people. It is fun to watch the identifications. LOL Penny, thanks for the panda photos. I love them; they are so cute! |
