Carole :X: :Hugs:

boss is off playing golf - big union gathering where they talk business and play a little golf..... however big crisis arose with an arbitrator but my boss called him and begged and whined so for now it's put off ! whew

my photos are a capture of a memory and not meant to be perfect or aligned or great lighting - they are of the moment! Sometimes in the heat of the moment - you get what you get and that makes it special and recalls to my mind how I felt. I enjoy sharing those moments with my friends and I truly enjoy seeing everyone elses photos as they are. That's what makes them personal. The traveling eagles was such fun earlier this year because we got to "photo visit" with many fellow cruzers and learn about where they live and the things they see!

this is not the first time my photos have been edited when I didn't want or expect them to be so... for now, I'm not going to post them here. I did post the slideshow at IWS yesterday when I posted here and that one remains. If I wanted a perfect shot - I'd have bought the postcard!

I've sent a note to George and I'm good - just not wanting to share those moments again here ..... for now. :(

Deb,

I want to thank you so much for your picture of the lighthouse. Lighthouses have always been symbols of hope and courage for me. I am grieving deeply for a dear friend of 38 years who died recently of cancer and your lighthouse was for me a beacon for his soul's journey. I love all your pictures but that one brought tears. I am sorry it is gone, but I can see it in my mind. I just wanted you to know.

I hope you see this. I have no idea how to use a quote button. I can just about manage to post something. But, I am getting there. Since I do not even own a camera, I have to rely on enjoying all of the pictures from you wonderful people for now. And, I am shy so have trouble jumping in ,even to say thanks.

From the San Diego Zoo blog, "Mark" commented regarding the webbing on Gao Gao's paws, a trait inherited by his newest Baiby:

“What could be the purpose of such a physical trait?”

Maybe it’s vestigial? Maybe a distant ancestor of pandas swam, a more recent ancestor didn’t need the webbing and so its offspring with the webbing genes turned off survived too, some descendants of the webless ones evolved into pandas, a mutation turned a webbing gene back on in Gao Gao, and he passed that mutation on to his sons and daughters?

Suzanne Hall, senior research technician for the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research responded:

Mark #49,

Interesting comment about vestigial webbing. The pandas are the oldest branch on the tree of modern bears, and perhaps their common ancestor had lots of webbing. Certainly polar bears, the most aquatic of all living bears, have webbed feet too. However, polars have webbed forepaws, while Gao has a single web on his back paws. I am not sure about other bear species, but most other bears are not very aquatic. Those that are seem to wade more than swim.

Ancient China, in which the pandas evolved, had a lot less habitat fragmentation than it does today. As a result, the bears roamed into lowlands in the country and had more access to running water. So it remains a possibility that webbing was useful in crossing that water. We would have to look more closely at how pandas swim, and the prevalence of webbing across the whole panda population, in order to understand better. Neither has been done thus far.

George,

I love all your pictures and look forward to them to bring joy to my day. I am a birder and love all kinds of nature. The spiders were such a kick. I am a big fan of spider webs. Being able to navigate this forum and enjoy all the pictures and comments has kept me going to my computer lessons. It has made what was a frustrating and ,yes, humbling experience enjoyable. So thanks and please don't go away.

I understand that urge to teak things. It is our family joke about me. I had to sit on my hands to relearn noninterference when my Grandkids were little. Creative people have a tough time in life. But what would the world do without us.

I am your greatful fan, Flybymar

Me too George! I understand the definition of "teach" vs "correction".

Really enjoyed the lesson yesterday. I was thinking that Deb's lighthouse would be gorgeous in a tall frame (enlarged to about two feet tall) :D

I also have one of those "grids" on the camera and just assumed it was for centering the subject. Hadn't thought of it as a tool to insure the camera was straight.

You are a good teacher and can tweak my photos anytime. :D

I know it has been said before, but I am amazed at how gentle those huge, large pawed creatures can be with a baby.
