My Plumaria are not doing well now. I have two where the stalks are soft! The third is ok still. I watered all of them the same. Waited till good and dry then watered a little. Have them under a Grow light. My 7 heads of Mixed Salad Greens are once again dying! I sent A.G. another e-mail, and they will reimburse me FREE of charge when they have completed making the Liquid Nutrients. It's so weird that it's the same A.G. that failed twice now! Both my Orchids died while I was on vacation. The lady taking care of them took them to her house, and put them out in the direct sun. By the time I got them back all the leaves were yellow and rotting. I cut them back, and I do see New foliage, but was told by a lady who has many Orchids to toss them as it would take years for them to catch up and bloom again, and it would not be worth it. Not sure I will attempt them again. |

A sign o' the times! I just saw a TV commercial for a home security system - the sales pitch was... a young woman kissing a date good night at her door, and when she goes inside, moments later another man comes along and and kicks in the front door, setting off the alarm. When the security company calls, the terrified young woman cries her "ex-boyfriend just kicked in the front door." Sheesh - the old pitch used to be to family men to protect their loved ones and belongings from masked robbers dressed in black... Now it's to single young women living alone and with stalking ex-boyfriends!! Sadly, it is a true selling point... |

Jennifer it was so good to "see" you here today. Glad to know you are keeping us in your life. George nice shots today. I keep forgetting to post that picture of my Double pearl tuberose. Your shot today reminded me to do that Jeannec you are so correct. I have seen that commercial and thought a lot about it too. It is unfortunate but true. I don't think who ever shot the commercial did a very good job regarding the lighting. It seems like it takes all night for some one to come out and talk to her. Maybe I am being overly critical. Plus when the phone rings I don't think I would calmly wait for someone to ask me if I needed help.  Cricket my Plumeria is also not doing as well as before. I think maybe because of the move. You need to fertilize every time you water I was told. I use a product called flower magic and it is 9-18-9 ratio. I bought it at the same time as the plant. I'm just not good at using it all the time. |

Pandas: All is WellPosted at 2:17 pm September 15, 2009 by Suzanne Hall Thanks to all of you for your concern about Bai Yun and her cub. Bai Yun did indeed take her youngster out into the sun room last night when she went out to feed. Our security staff, who check on the pandas several times each night after the San Diego Zoo is closed, found the cub resting comfortably on a pile of bamboo under the stars, with Mother a few feet away. All was fine, and all is fine again today. In the next few days you might see Bai Yun with access to her garden room again. This is a natural step in the progression of the postpartum period. In future weeks, Bai Yun will begin separating herself from her youngster for more and more time, usually during periods of rest. She might head out to the garden room (Camera #15) for a nap while the cub remains behind in the den. If she wants to bring the little one with her, that is fine, too; you will notice we have placed a lair into the garden room should she want to deposit the cub there. Whether or not she uses it is her choice. A bed of fresh bamboo may be even more appealing than a fabricated lair! Again, it’s up to Bai Yun. Please remember that about this time with Zhen Zhen, Bai Yun was experimenting with taking the cub out of the den (see post, There’s No Place like Home). Recall also that the cub is no longer tiny and hairless but is covered with fur and a layer of fat built upon Bai Yun’s ample, rich milk. If the cub was unhappy, cold, or otherwise uncomfortable, it would vocalize its discontent, and we have never seen Bai Yun refuse to attend to a crying infant. We trust her to do what is right for her infant. As always, staff is watching and responding to events that occur. But please be reassured that all is well, and Bai Yun is doing her usual fabulous job of caring for her infant. She is, after all, a “hero mother” now! Suzanne Hall is a senior research technician for the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research. |

Thanks for posting the updates on the unfortunate 'Spot' George . I am so glad he was found and can be rehabbed. He really does look so much smaller than the Juvie Bald Eagles we are used to. I thought they were a much bigger bird but maybe I am mixing them up with the Sea Eagles. I think your of the 'moss' rose is actually a Portulaca bloom....maybe they are one and the same Cute little blue birdie too

Class was so interesting tonight. We went on a mindful walk. No one was allowed to talk and we did about 10 min's just observing our surroundings. It was very enlightening how to walk in silence without a purpose or a destination. I felt a littl self conscious as we walked along and being observed by others on campus. Even tho we were told to not feel that way. |
