DH gave me a finch feeder for my birthday last month and we just go around to hanging it up. It is a double "sock" feeder and we filled it with thristle seed. The lesser goldfinches love it! We normally have about 4 to 6 of them in the yard. We love them - they are so delicate (compared to the house finches) and colorful. Well, it only took 11 minutes from when DH hung the new feeder before we had over 20 lesser goldfinches clinging to the 2 bags! We are now inundated with them. The new visitors seem a little smaller than our resident goldfinches and none have the beautiful adult male markings, so they may be juvies heading further south in New Mexico for the winter. The lesser goldfinch in this area does not really migrate. Some will move around the state seeking food. Our resident ones stay in our yard all year since there is plenty of food and water here. I wonder how many of the newbies will hang around?

If not mistaken, after the mating/nesting season the males do revert from the yellow school bus colored plumes to the more olive drab colorations that the female has year round. Could it be possible they are en route from the cooler regions and have now gotten their winter feathers??

George, I think that is true of the American Goldfinch. My observation of the lesser goldfinch is that the immature males and females, both immature and adult, look almost alike. The lesser goldfinch does not change colors with the seasons like the American Goldfinch does. Once the male gets his adult plumage, he wears it all year here. In our yard we get some each year moving from the northern part of the state to the southern. If there is enough food and water in a spot, they stay there. Most of our new arrivals appear to me to be juvies.

CatM. I hope you are enjoying your finch feeder. I purchased a sock feeder last year, unfortunately the red squirrels destroyed it within 24 hours. I had a pile of thistles on the ground. :( I had to purchase a wire thistle feeder. No more squirrell problems with the thistle feeder now. :D I just love watching the finches and their colors are remarkable.
