The Fledgling Pigeon and his mom:

A pigeon had just fledged and was away from the nest trying to return. His mom as there trying to encourage him,but the baby pigeon said, "I can't make it; I'll get too tired." His mother said, "Don't worry; I'll tie a piece of string to one of your legs and the other end to mine."

The baby started to cry.

Ah catM, ive only seen the American Goldfinch and not the lesser goldfinch. Now I have to get myself to an area where they are to see them. :X: I love watching the american goldfinch in flight because they fly almost as if they were drunk in that they dont fly straigtht from point to point but undulate en route the way a drunk human would stagger home from the bar,

George, I haven't seen any American Goldfinches here. They are supposed to migrate here in the winter, but I haven't seen one. We get the slightly smaller lesser goldfinch.

I have groups of the American Finches every year enjoying my all you can eat thistle buffet on one of the banks of the homestead. They are a real challange to photograph and it took me over a year to get one acceptable image of the male. I have now been trying to get a female to frame and hang next to the male i shot for almost four years now. Bird photography can be very frustrating i have learned thats for sure.

I WANT A SHOT OF THE FEMALE FINCH but she seems to be either shy or always in a bad mood and fies off in a rage when i try to get a shot of her. This is my ongoing photoquest

Birds migrate? Hmmmm???? I never noticed when birds come or go. Just that they are there and I enjoy them. Maybe California birds don't have to go one way or the other to keep warm like in Penn?

I came home last night and my TV was out again. The one in the bedroom goes out with the electricity goes down. So yesterday when they came out and turned off my electricity off went the TV. I "sat" on the remote in the living room and pushed a button that interrupted the TV reception. So I spent over a half hour with the techs on the phone to get them both working again. Satelite is a pain!! At first they told me to call the manufacturer. Pass the buck....NOT. So yesterday was frustrating all the way around.

It's foggy here too. I'm glad when someone around me posts that it's foggy there too. When I llived on the East end of Ventura it was sunny almost all the time and I never wondered about whether it was sunny anywhere else. Now at the beach you have to be prepared to be hot if you leave here.

Regan how is that chair working out for you? It looks a lot like a massage chair with an extra cushion around the face. I'd be happy to come visit when you are up to it. How was that smoothie Cathy brought you? I really enjoyed the one Peppermint brought me when I was in your "position".

I too send good wishes to those celebrating their new year. We talked about that last night in my class. Very spiritual time.

Pit bulls have a bad rep. So do Rotty's and Doberman breed. I remember when I was raising my kids and DH and I were both extremely busy in our careers we had a live in for the house and kids. I brought home a rotweiler and my DH had a cow. But he was gone a lot and I wanted some form of protection. DH thought we were going to be eaten by those massive pinching teeth.
One day I went outside to see Maria sitting in a rocking chair with Koenig on her lap and she was singing lulaby's to him. He had just gotten his ears and tail clipped and she felt so sorry for him. All I could think was "oh yeah this is going to be a great watch dog." But he was a great watch dog. Very loving too. We gave him some hefty calcium and protein and that dog was huge but gentle and loving as can be.
Here I am procrastinating again. I have a research paper due next Tuesday and I'm sitting here talking to you instead. I'm so glad you are all here to blame it on. How else could I justify my behavior?

A million snow geese stop over at wildlife refuge en route to wintering grounds

Like a blizzard filling the sky, these pictures show one of nature's most amazing displays as more than a million snow geese stop for a rest during their annual migration.

The spectacular shots were taken by Mike Hollingshead in Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City, Missouri. The geese must travel 2,500 miles twice a year.

Every autumn the snow geese head from their main breeding grounds in central Canada to their wintering grounds in the Gulf of Mexico. The noisy birds migrate in unusually large flocks of 100 to 1,000 that are made up of many family groups. Biologists still do not understand how the birds decide when to migrate.

A million snow geese crowded into Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge this autumn on their way to their wintering grounds in Mexico

The birds manage to stay together in family groups numbering from 100 to 1,000 on their journey south from Canada

Male and female geese look very similar although the males are slightly bigger. Although a swirling flock of snow geese looks like falling snow, there are darker birds among the group. These blue geese, long thought to be a separate species, are simply a dark version of the same bird.

More than a million converge on the national park, which acts as an important stopover on the Central Flyway migration route. It is on one of the narrowest points of the migration route.

This year managers estimate 1.2million snow geese rested at the 11.5 square mile refuge. It used to be a private hunting area but now its wildlife is protected.

Some birds however have been recorded to make the entire journey without stopping for a rest - a flight of 70 hours. All the geese are less inclined to stop on their return north as they are eager to breed.

Snow geese breed during the Arctic summer (same as the UK) and migrate during autumn months. They spend winter in Mexico and travel back to Canada in late spring

Routes used by birds are established because there is plenty of food and water along its length and few mountains or large hills to block the flyway.

During the flight south the birds fly between 40 and 50 miles an hour at around 3,000ft. However, some have been recorded as high as 20,000ft on radar.

They fly in an unusual undulating fashion often known as a 'wavie'. The birds fly at different heights and rise and descend slightly on the journey. They also form imperfect Vs and while there is usually a leader at the head, this position changes among the flock.

Flight of fancy: Snow Geese spend the winter in Mexico before flying north to their breeding grounds in Canada during the summer

Snow geese arrive at their cold nesting grounds before the snow has melted and breed over the arctic summer. As the young grow the adult geese go through an annual moult and are rendered flightless for about a month.

They then make the long journey back to Mexico with their young between August and October and stay with them for their first winter. They have strong family bonds and usually mate for life.

A hundred years ago the snow goose was in decline and hunting them was stopped in the United States in 1916. Hunting was allowed again in 1975, but the population has still trebled in the last 30 years and continues to grow at more than five per cent a year.

They have increased to the point that both their tundra breeding areas and the saltmarsh wintering grounds are becoming severely degraded, and this is affecting other species using the same habitat.

Sandie - When it comes to pitbulls, rotties, German shepherds, etc, they aren't bad dogs, it's their owners that are just plain BAD. They are very clever breeds and easily learn what they are taught. If an agressive owner wants a "killer dog" he can train it that way, but if he wants a great family dog he can also train it that way. I really dislike the reputation that these breeds have. My 2 yorkies (may they RIP) played with a pitbull who wouldn't stop licking them and was so gentle.

WOW Penny! incredible snow geese pics!

Lexi has a lot of rottie/shepherd - she is a tender hearted love dog :D

CatM - I love the little finches. I have been happily lurking lately. Tonight I leave for Sedona where Dad feeds a couple types of finches. We are driving to Vegas, then Carson City the next day, then Reno then Paradise, CA (north of Sacramento) to see my aunts, uncles and 104 year old grandma. It's good we are going now - grandma isn't doing so well..... hospice is in every day.... It will take a couple days of driving to get back to Sedona and another one to get home. Good thing I like driving ;)

On the up side, Laurie's arm is healing!! She has hired a medmal attorney. She is still on disability and will be up next week while I am away to watch my furrkids.

Deb - I was hoping to see your thoughts on last night's Survivor but I'll catch up when I get back.

HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH!
