Black squirrels are a sub species of the eastern gray squirrel and there are large conentrations in the Midwest. from the wikipedia page on their habitat: As a melanistic variety of the Grey Squirrel, individual black squirrels can exist wherever Grey Squirrels live. Grey mating pairs may produce black offspring, and in areas with high concentrations of black squirrels, mixed litters are common.[1] The black subgroup seems to have been dominant throughout North America prior to the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, since their dark colour helped them hide in virgin forests which tended to be very dense and shaded. As time passed, hunting and deforestation led to biological advantages for grey coloured individuals.[2] Today, the black subgroup is particularly abundant in the northern part of the Eastern Grey Squirrel's range.[3][4] This is likely due to the significantly increased cold tolerance of black individuals. This gives them an advantage over greys, which have to eat more food to get the same heat advantage through metabolic activity.[5] Black individuals also enjoy visibility advantages in denser northern forests.[1] Large natural populations of black squirrels can be found throughout Ontario, and in several parts of Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio.[6] Populations of grey squirrels in which the black subgroup is dominant can be found in these five areas as well as in smaller enclaves in New Jersey, Illinois and Connecticut.[7] Outside areas of North America where black squirrels occur naturally in abundance, there are several notable introduced populations of Black Squirrels: Mottled black squirrel in Toronto, OntarioIn the United States, the city of Kent, Ohio has a significant black squirrel population, after 10 were legally imported from Canada in February of 1961. They have driven out native squirrels in many areas, though they peacefully coexist with most other rodent wildlife.[8] Black squirrels are well established on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities. They are mostly found in the city of Rock Island. According to one story, recounted in the book "The Palmers," they were first introduced on the Rock Island Arsenal Island. Some of them then escaped by jumping across ice floes on the Mississippi River when it was frozen and populated other areas in Rock Island. [9] Black squirrels are abundant in Battle Creek, Michigan and according to legend were first introduced there by Will Keith Kellogg, founder of the Kellogg Company in an effort to destroy the local population of red squirrels. The story continues that this same population of squirrels was further introduced to the campus of Michigan State University by John Harvey Kellogg for the same purpose[10] Fort Mitchell, Kentucky maintains a significant population of black squirrels after several were introduced from Detroit prior to 1977[11] |

Wow George I did not know about any of that. Maybe I misunderstood the information that they gave on TV today. The way the show ended I thought was cute. They put THE END as they went off the air!!! I wonder why they took it off? |

Well the usual reason is lack of ratings. However, perhaps one can also compare this to the advent of the so called reality shows instead of the network dramas and the cost of production for both. The commentator i heard said that due to the other choices for programming the networks are feeling the pinch in their pocketbook when it comes to producing a drama show or soap opera. I wonder too if due to the change in lifestyle with the normally traditional audience of the stay at home housewife now out in the workforce too has helped with the demise? I wonder if this will just be the first of them to go and how soon the others may be taken off the air by the respective networks. |

This morning I ordered all my wrapping paper, Gift Tags, and ribbon I will need. It came to $170.00 and that was a deal believe it or not! Now I wait till that arrives, and then start wrapping up everything I bought, tagging and taping bows on for Christmas Eve when I do them up nice for under the tree. I will be doing the tree again this year. I really outdid myself last year, and it looked as though it was Professionally done! Hope I can make it look just as nice this year. Chris the boy Lisa & Jerry have Custody of attempted Suicide last night, and is now in a Padded room on Precautions. So sad he wouldn't even take his own Nephew to the Hospital, and made Lisa do it. Like she doesn't have enough on her hands working a full time job, taking care of the garden, the animals in the barn every day, not to mention helping the boys with their homework, and cooking, cleaning, laundry etc... PLease keep Chris in your prayers. |

Karen, I your patio! Can I come and visit????Couldn't believe what a creep Russell was on Survivor last night! I can't see how he really thinks he is going to win. The sooner he is voted off, the better. He will do nothing but hurt the team. Cricket - why on earth do you order wrappings? Seems like you could buy really nice stuff locally and save a ton of money. |

Uh Karen...would you mind when you're done coming to Ventura and help me decorate my patio??? I wouldn't mind inviting my own self down too. Harpo needs a vacation and I'd be thrilled to help that along!!! When I am faced with issues I can not deal with I usually bake. I'm stuck on this research paper so I decided to bake pumpkin bread. I did not realize the bottom of the oven was all nasty....so now lots of smoke to get rid of. I left the whole place open but the smoke was nasty! I found easy off but I couldn't open the stupid can. OK so now I have to go get some. Put away the batter and wait til later. Cricket I'm sorry for Chris. And Lisa should have at least had help. Wow, I have NEVER spent that much on wrapping paper. OMG. I love decorating a tree but have not had a place to put it for years. This year should be differnt. |

Sandie...sure, come on down! We could have a Cruzer get together And I am not good at decorating. Too picky and what I REALLY want is expensive. Linda...you are welcome, also, but afraid you'd have to stay in a hotel after as I don't have a sleeping place left. Gonna have to start building on a 2nd story if I get anymore people moving in permanently Not that you'd move in but am just saying cause of all the people that live here now. Am only experiencing the empty nest syndrome thru the eagle nests! |

I always buy my 'Christmas supplies' after Christmas when it's 75% to 90% off. Several years I got 50 big rolls of wrapping paper for 4¢ each, and ??? bags of bows for 1¢ each. I gave 40 rolls of wrapping paper and several bags of bows to our local shelter for Alternatives for Domestic Violence for their Christmas exchange.....and I'm still using the other 10 rolls.
