Hi everybody,

This week, Pete continued working on the Two Harbors and in the office while I have been mostly observing the Middle Ranch pair. As I mentioned on a previous update, this pair has been spending the majority of its time in the burnt area by the Haypress Reservoir and for no obvious reason. There’s not many fish left in that lake and yet every time I go there I find them perched along the electric poles. It is still unknown to us what they find so appealing about this area and what exactly they are feeding on but we’ll find out eventually.
I have been sitting out there for hours at the time and have taken pictures from all angles and have witnessed all kinds of interactions with other raptors and ravens.
Here are some of the pictures.

There’s the possibility that the eagles have been stealing from the hawks in the area it’s still unlikely that they can make a “living” out of that. There were at least 5 Red-tailed hawks soaring above one of those days, I only got 4 of them in this picture

K93 is looking very intently at a haw that just dove into one of the canyons, perhaps intending to dive down to steal the catch or waiting for some leftovers?

Notice the difference in size between these two birds

Despite the fact that raven a so much smaller it impresses me how close they get to the eagles and harass them

Here they are on Saturday

On this photo you can notice how considerably larger the female is compared to her mate.

I also made a video of K93 and A32

We have also been working on putting our 2010 Bald Eagle Calendar together. It’s up and definitely worth the wait so check it out; it has some impressive shots of our beautiful Channel Island eagles!

I’ll say good-bye with a great view of my everyday drive back into town.

Thanks Steffani - great shots of those two! I really liked the clips of K93 with the red-tail and A32 with the raven - that raven sure was trying to egg on a chase or something! Beautiful parting shot, too :)^

:}^ STEFFANI Loved the video of K93 and A32--especially the end where the Raven shows K93 his own moxy. :D It certainly is bewildering why this pair are spending so much time in that barren landscape. As you say, "time will tell".

P.S. The close up photos are really beautiful of this special pair and their "companions" too.

Great pics and video! You have to wonder what the attraction is to that area that keeps them there! Exciting times ahead!

Thanks for the great photos. Sometimes I wonder if A32/K93 just like those poles for the perching diversity? Actually they're great with a multi-level appeal. Like a GIANT avian playgym.

Looking forward to getting the new calendar one of these days soon. :)^

 Hi, Steffi, great report, good pictures this week.

Just an idea on why the pair of eagles is hanging in the Burned-Off area:

Whenever brush land burns off, it opens great opportunities for new shrubs and grasses to grow as soon as the next rain, and that new growth (which literally 'grows like weeds') in turn feeds more rabbits, squirrels, rats, deer or whatever lives in the area. So, I think the eagles, like the Red-tails, are preying on these animals.

Oorrr.... They just might like that beautiful, high perch in the sun and the wind.

Question on the beautiful 2010 calendar, Steffi:

Do you know if the calendar is printed in the U.S.A. somewhere??
I prefer to support our local businesses.

Thank you.

Jim :D
