Hi everybody, This week I kept watching the Middle Ranch pair, K93 and A32. I have found them by the Haypress reservoir almost everyday. Here is K93 and also a short video of him. You can hear the female vocalizing in the background too. ![]() ![]() Pete was working with the crew on the Northern Island this week. I did some more work on the Two Harbors cam equipment, hiking out and hooking up more batteries to power the current camera and a future 24-hour cam we are planning on installing this year. It will be very interesting to watch the nighttime activity of this pair and, hopefully, their offspring’s. This is where we plan to place the night cam and zoom it in. ![]() Pete is working on maybe being able to control this cam remotely from our computers, which means that, there is a possibility that others (you!) could have a chance to zoom in or rotate the cam to have a better view of the area and the harbor! We’ll keep working on this and will explain later how it’ll work. A view of the batteries and the largest solar panel. ![]() The other two solar panels we kayaked and later hiked up. ![]() The TH eagles have started already bringing some nesting material. That large branch you see on the left side of the nest wasn’t there a few weeks ago. ![]() This week I also retrieved the Twin Rocks cam, 9ft. camera pole and the 300ft. long power/video cable from the TR site; a lot easier said than done! We’re planning on placing a cam somewhere else so we can have a better view of the nest but just in case the eagles decided to move back and nest here again at some point, we wanted to remove all the cam equipment we had placed on the old nest; it sure would make next year’s banding a lot easier if they moved back. This is what the old TR nest looks like. ![]() Last year’s TR nest. ![]() I also took a picture of 1998’s TR tree nest. Such a beautiful oak tree and a great view. ![]() Cont… |

On Wednesday, Dr. Vickers and I trimmed Hydi’s beak. It had overgrown so much that she had started eating from the side of her beak rather than from the front and the pieces of pork were getting stuck at the tip as well, upsetting her (and taking it out on me). She did wonderfully that day and she behaved no different with me even though I grabbed her and released her. She is now eating normally but at the beginning we had to work on her getting used to her “new” beak. First, she had problems tearing up the quail and was getting frustrated and only eating the pork. Eventually, I introduced the quail again as she was quickly eating the pork and it worked, she tore it up and finished everything. I wish I had a picture of her new look but if I pull out the camera out of my pockets she baits so I haven’t taken any pictures. I do have some pictures of Pimu and a cool story as well. I was about to feed Pimu when I noticed something odd around her. Take a look and tell me if you see anything strange in her cage. ![]() Look closer ![]() There is rat hanging by her perch and it’s too high up for her to get it from the lower perch and she cant reach it from the top one either. The poor thing had gotten tangled on some loose netting between Pimu’s perches, strangled itself and died. ![]() I cut the netting and placed the rat on her perch; she was vocalizing the whole time, I’d like to think she was thanking me for helping her get to that tasty rat! ![]() K87, one of the two TH chicks from 2009 is still around the island. I’m sure he’s hanging out with other juveniles whose radios have died. The 2010 IWS Bald Eagle Calendar as well as new magnets and buttons, featuring Tachi, the island fox, our beloved captive eagles and some wild ones, are up now. Check them out and support IWS’ conservation efforts. They make wonderful gifts too! Until next week, Steffani |

How frustrating to have a special treat just dangling out of your reach! I'm sure Pimu was expressing her heartfelt thanks! Glad to hear all went well with Hydi and all's back to normal. Lots of work going on all around the islands! Can't wait to see the night cam ..... we've all posted questions and wondered so now we'll know - maybe! LOL Thanks so much for all you guys do and certainly for the updates of what is going on - just cause we see MT nests doesn't mean it's quiet time - for either the eagles or IWS! And that's a mighty big stick - now how are they gonna tuck that one in with all the rest .....

Thank you Steffani, that was a great update! I'm glad Hydi was a good girl with her beak trimming. She's a beauty! I remember our tour with you last May, you gave Pimu a rat, and she was loving it! I bet this one will be just as yummy. Thanks Peter for your hard work on the camera's, it's greatly appreciated. |

Steffani Thanks for the update. Good news that K-93 and A-32 are still an item. So much camera equipment and batteries to move around, good thing you and Peter are in such good shape. Happy to hear that Hydi finally adjusted to her new beak. Poor little rat, but lucky Pimu. |

Hi, Steff! Great update as always. I salute you and Dr. Pete for your tenacity and dedication, I couldn't imagine y'all fitting all that equipment on a kayak so you must've done several runs, and hiking uphill on a rocky terrain lugging those around, your guns (muscles) must be honed like a rock by now! Pimu's rat story is very entertaining, and to imagine her frustration - so close, yet so far away.... but in the end, she stuck around the rat to make it easier for you to spot it, get it free and put it on a plate (perch) for her.... we can make a children's book on that story alone! Thank you for all that you do! Abg |

Thank you Steff for the update. Beautiful photo of 1998’s TR tree nest. Thank you and Dr. Sharpe for all your IWS’ conservation efforts. Without you there would be no hope. :soar: |

Eeeeeeek! I'd have run the other way. What a way to get a tasty treat huh? Thanks Steffani... for all of your wonderful updates. It always amazes me that the eagles don't seem to mind all the cam/solar equipment but then when I think about it, they all grew up with it. When I first ever started watching the WE and TH nests, I couldn't believe that the eagles nested on the rocks. I'm with Topa... that TR oak nest tree is beautiful. I'd nest there if I were an eagle. Thanks for the link to the 2010 calendar... Will order mine when I get home tonight.

![]() Steffani, so happy to see the TR pair's first nest in the tree.. so much more beautiful from your point of view... but you pointed it out to me in 2008... I love that the pair kept moving down the hill with their nests to get closer to the water... its hard to lug those fish up so high... |

WOW, Stefffani, so much to comment on. So eggcited about the prospect of the 24 hour cam. I remember one nighttime at one of the nests one summer evening when the activities of the fishing boats illuminated the nest. You guys and gals are truly weightlifters with those batteries and solar panels. The 1998 TR nest is absolutely beautiful and in such a picturesque locationl!!! Seems like it would have been hard to tag those eaglets. I'm glad Hydi's beak trimming went well. Pimu's "stranger" - I saw that right away, but didn't know what it was. Glad she finally got to "enjoy" her tasty rat!
