Hi everybody,

This week we have been working on the West End camera system. We are a bit short in time but hopefully we can place a second, nighttime camera at this site as well. Since we want to have a close-up view of the nest, we have been trying to figure out where to place the camera pole so that it doesn’t interfere with the eagles’ flying and landing patterns and also that it’s not in the view of the current camera. This is a challenge, given that the nest is at the top of a tall pinnacle, leaving us very limited choices.
Here’s Pete climbing the WE nest.

We considered placing the camera on the other side of the nest, facing the current camera but there’s isn’t really a place to ground the pole and it could probably get in the way of the eagles’ landing path.

Here’s Pete taking a picture of the nest from where we’d like the camera to sit at. We’re still working on it.

We will keep working on the WE as well as the Two Harbors camera systems. There will be a lot of new equipment to be bought and hiked out to the sites, a few new towers to be built, others taken down, many connection to be replaced, etc. Behind the scenes there’s a lot going on. And we still need to figure out where to place a camera for the Twin Rocks nest; figure out the Rattlesnake and Middle ranch pair plans soon enough to place more cams; build a observation blind for the Seal Rocks nest… yes, there’s much to be done before breeding season begins.

On Thursday and all day yesterday I spend sitting at the Salta Verde ridges surveying and waiting for eagles to show up. On the first day I heard an adult vocalize and later got a visual of a juvenile but wasn’t able to identify it. Yesterday, I got two visuals of and adult (or maybe two eagles) eagle perched on a rock in the ocean near Silver Canyon, about a mile east from where I was.

I was too far away to get a tag number so I’ll have to go back and explore this canyon more thoroughly in hopes of possibly finding a new pair! This would be such a great place for eagles to establish a territory. A bit of a challenge for us to monitor it but we sure hope someone starts nesting here.

The 2010 IWS Bald Eagle Calendar as well as new magnets and buttons, featuring Tachi, the island fox, our beloved captive eagles and some wild ones, are up now. Check them out and support IWS’ conservation efforts. They make wonderful gifts too!

I’ll close this update with a couple of shots of a typical Catalina sunset.

Until next week and thanks for all the continuous support. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

great photos and update.
i can see why you folks are having issues as to where to mount a camera. i would suggest using 1/2" bolts like they use for rock climbing and have a large 20-30" pole [bolted] to some nearby rock a few feet away so it doesn't get in the way...that way yo can have it trained stright down onto the nest. you choices are limited, i see

keep up the good work

happy thanksgiving all
