Conclusion: All Eagles All The Time: Season 2009/2010.

We have followed the Eagles ... on cam ... on the Pelican Harbor Nest ... Two Harbors Nest and the West End Nest .....
From their early Nestorations .... through Bonding .... Eggs/Incubation .... Chicks .... Banding to Fledging.

The Seal Rocks Eagles used the same nest as last year ... so no cam there again this season.

The Eagles at the Twin Rocks Nest stayed with the same nest as last season ... and again the cam was not reliable.

There were also no cams on the Middle Ranch Nest ... Pinnacle Rock Nest and Rattlesnake Canyon Nest

We were kept up to date of events happening at these nests .. all on Santa Catalina Island .. through the IWS Catalina Updates.

Separate threads .. one for each of these nests .. were started .. and relevant information was posted on them .. to make it easier to keep track of what was occurring throughout the season.

Information was also taken from the Northern Channel Islands IWS Updates .. and entered onto a new thread Northern Channel Islands Nests, Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands.

This kept us up to date with events happening on the Cueva Valdez ... Malva Real and Sauces Canyon Nest on Santa Cruz Island and the Trap Canyon Nest and the newly discovered Lopez Canyon Nest on Santa Rosa Island.

Together with information on the other Non-Breeding pairs on SC at Fraser Point .. FryÕs Harbor ... Willows Anchorage and Yellowbanks.

This Season has again been a roller coaster ride.

This year was a very successful one for the Northern Channel Islands Nests ... with new nests discovered with chicks already hatched ... and successful fledglings too.

On Catalina Island this season started well too. Then Twin Rocks lost their eggs ... and the chicks on the Middle Ranch and Rattlesnake nests were found deceased shortly after they had all fledged.

So here is a review ... in Alphabetical Order.

Find out all about the nests on the ... Meet the Adult Pairs thread.

We hope that ALL the Eagles ... Adults and Fledglings ...
Stay Safe ... wherever they may go.

Thanks to Dr. Sharpe/Eagle Guy, Steffani/eaglegal and all the IWS Crew for their photos and videos used in this thread.

During February and most of March the IWS Crew worked hard at trying to find where the Cueva Valdez pair might nest.

Then at the end of March they not only discovered the new nest but A-00 was actually incubating .. but it wasnÕt until mid April they could verify that there was just one egg.

A-24 used to be the female of this Non-Breeding pair .. but in February the IWS Crew couldnÕt find her and it appears that our own Princess Cruz .. A-49 .. may be the new female here.

The IWS Crew knew that A-46 had been hanging out at Frys .. however in March, they were surprised to find that he may have a mate .. none other than A-24 .. the original female at Frasers!

By July they were looking more like a pair ... so all of us will be keeping our :X: crossed for next season here too!

In March a new nest was found at JohnsonÕs Lee on SR Island .. with a new pair .. a blue-blinged gal and a guy from Catalina!

We thought they had made history by producing the first chick on Santa Rosa in 60 years! However another new nest was found .. with an older chick .. so he claimed that title!

Throughout January, February and March the IWS Crew kept checking on this pair. They had found their nest .. but it wasnÕt until early April that they could confirm they were using it .. and that two eggs had been laid.

The pair were faithfully incubating each time the nest was checked ... but at the end of April the nest was found to be empty and some small egg shards were beneath the tree.

The Crew have no idea what caused the failure ... but this happens and we will just have to hope for more positive results next year.

It was mid February before this pair really started nesting activity ... just in time because by February 23rd they had two eggs in the nest.

Unfortunately one egg was lost .. but we were delighted when the other did successfully hatch.

In January Steffani checked both nests that this pair have used over the past two years. In February she gave us the exciting news that they had decided on the 2008 nest in GallagherÕs Canyon ... and that one egg was already being incubated ... and by March there were 2 eggs and the male was doing his part with incubating duties.

This was excellent news as this pair had been unsuccessful the past two years so we all had our fingers crossed all would go well this season.

There was a preliminary report posted on the August 11thÕs Catalina Update.

They were both negative for West Nile Virus ... and K-09 ( the better of the two bodies) showed no signs of internal injury that would indicate trauma or raven attack.

Because of the condition of both bodies ... limited diagnostics tests could be performed ... so their deaths will remain a mystery.

This season there was a new female at this nest. The original female A-02 was found deceased in July 2009.

Late January the IWS Crew saw the pair working on the nest in all the rainstorms .. and they continued to work on it together during February .. getting it ready for the two eggs that would be laid in March. (One egg did not hatch)

Unfortunately one egg was lost in March ... but we were delighted to welcome a healthy chick that was the first Catalina chick hatched in 2010.

A-08/male & A-22/female

In February the IWS Crew checked this pairÕs nest and found that no work had been done on it .. so it looked like .. due to their previous failures .. they had given up and abandoned the old site.

They kept searching to see if they could see where they had relocated .. and in May not only did they locate the new nest .. but there was a large chick occupying it!

Nest is circled

(Click on thumbnail to see full size)

In January/February the adults were around .. and in mid February they were actively nestorating the same nest as they used last season.

At the end of February they were seen incubating ... so had at least one egg in the nest and in early March it was confirmed they had 2 eggs.

However over the next two weeks it was observed that the both adults were perching away from the nest and little incubating was being done.

Then we were given the sad news that this nest had failed.

Throughout April and May the adults were tracked to see if they would try again ... but the nest remained empty.

So ... an usual result for this nest ... hopefully next season will be better.

This season an infrared light was added to the camera .. and so we were able to watch the adults throughout the night as they prepared for another nesting season ... and also see who else visited the nest when they were both absent and present!

Two eggs were laid in February and we were delighted when they both successfully hatched.
