Dr Sharpe. are we sure there is not an issue with K24's left foot ???Even when he is moving around on the rock, he seems to be favoring that foot. Thanks Linda |

Yes - can see it now as he is standing on the rock in full view - does not seem to be putting his full weight on his left foot and raises it often. |

Many of the chatters on the sportsmansparadiseonline chat have made comments about the zooming that was done about 5:15 on 6/7 in on K24's foot, and some think they see something stuck in his foot between a couple of toes. You can actually see what they are talking about on the screen shots posted by Cumbrian in the nest observations. Of course, that could be artifact but perhaps more opportunities to zoom in on the foot will determine that. |

Peter are you going to be able to go back out there to help the chick? |

I'll be back on Catalina next Wednesday. We will evaluate again then, but it is not just a matter of walking up to the nest as it was at banding. All three birds would most likely jump with potential injuries to all of them. We also need to get permission from the Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Game. I'm sure eagles get hooks in their feet a lot (I know one of the Seal Rocks adults has been caught and released with a hook in its foot) and they have evolved to deal with Fish spines in their feet, which can also have barbs like a fish hook. |

This situation is certainly no win, however, if nothing is done for this bird, what will happen to him? An infection ?? Constant pain ?? I understand the danger of going back to the nest, but I can't fathom what his life will be with a fish hook in his foot. Linda |

I also understand the danger of going back to the nest. But a fish bone is organic and thinner and could eventually break down, but a fish hook wouldn't. At least the line was cut. Definitely a no-win situation

OMG this is just terrible
that fish hook doesn't damage his talon or cause a major infection ![]() What a horrible situation and not be able to do anything about it immediately ![]() In Canada the permit would be allowed because this is an incident caused by humans. Jeanne is so right...that hook is not going to bio degrade ![]() |

Thanks Peter for your response. I worry about infection too! I hope something, somehow can be done to remove the hook.

Thank you Dr. Shape for your response. I guess I (we) weren't expecting that. We were hoping you would say you could fix it.
