Dr. Sharpe I would love to hear you opinion of what happened between K24 and parent on Saturday morning 7/14. Parent brought food to nest and K24 followed it in and started mantling. The parent left but came back 2 or 3 times apparently trying to get the fish back. That just seemed so odd to me. Poor K24 has to deal with that with his sisters and rarely wins but now the parent? I worry about K24 getting enough to eat. Also K20 getting beaten up by K01 on the nest. He must have been desperate for food. This does not bode well for our young fledglings - the shortage of fish this season. |

Judy, K-24 was not involved in this morning's skirmish. It was between K-01 and K-20. |

Hi Dr. Sharpe, yes I just realized that. I thought they were 2 different incidences but they were one and the same. My heart goes out to K20 though. He must have been desperate for food. |

This is more of a comment than a question: how in the heck to these adults know the difference between their own offspring and an eaglet/juvie who is not!? They can't read the wing tags! I guess that's another one of those instinctual things - just amazing! |

Carol - I'm sure to them, they all have distinct features. We probably all look alike to them, though we don't to each other. |

Hopefully the next Catalina Island update will tell us that K20 was spotted and doing fine.

Dr. Sharpe, I take back that comment about being worried K24 is getting enough to eat. There was a confirmed sighting of K24 grabbing the fish right after K01 dropped and then K24 flew away with it. He has developed the perfect plan for getting and keeping his share! |
