Dr. Sharpe - Approximately when do eaglets start catching their own food? I can't help but wonder how they learn that without making a fatal mistake being caught by a wave.

They are thought to start catching live prey when they are about a year old. They can swim for quite a long way if they do end up in the water.

If it takes 1 year, how do they survive until then? Surely the parents don't feed them for that long.

They are scavengers until they learn to hunt. Adults also prefer to scavenge when there are dead things available.
