<::: PLEASE READ

The Nest Observations/Nest Watch thread remains open .. as long as there are cameras .. which are operational .. to watch.

Normally the VCOE and the IWS work on the cam equipment during the fall/winter .. so the cams may go off from time to time .. but we are normally advised by them if they are working in the area.

IWS weekly updates will probably be posted .. as in the past .. during this off season.
Notified on the Catalina Update: October 30-November 6, 2013 ~ The next update will be in two weeks from today and will continue on a two week basis until the breeding season starts again.

Just a few Gentle Reminders about posting on this thread. (Helps to save time when reading through it.)

Please remember that it is the CHANNEL ISLANDS NESTS ONLY ... either on or off camera ... that we post our observations/comments about.

There are FOUR IWS nests with cameras online ... so it is important to know WHICH NEST you are observing.

Please put the Initials at the start of your post.

These nests are all in California ... so it's Pacific Time on this coast.

We prefer that the Quote Button is not used on this thread ... and if you must use it ... because you are referring to something on a previous page ... then take TEXT only ... never captures or video.

Thanks!

“A request from Dr. Sharpe”

Eagle Guy,Mar 28 2011
09:34 AM
We are recording the activity at the Two Harbors and West End nests so that we can identify all the prey brought to the nests to calibrate the results of the nest excavations at the end of the season. I'd appreciate if you could continue to report the times that prey are brought to the nest so that later we can go through the recordings more quickly to identify the items. Thanks.

Maybe prey delivery posts could be started with  >>: even if it is a bird or unidentified,  so that we can spot them more easily.

To make it easier for the biologists to see the prey deliveries, please limit the use of the blue fish to prey deliveries only.

Begin your post with the nest initials, followed by the time of delivery & the blue fish.

We are recording prey deliveries at all the online nests, so please continue to use the blue fish for deliveries at any nest.

Thank you!

Bringing Forward:

After hours of working on the feeds yesterday, it seems, at least for my computers, that the embedded media players don't seem to work with Firefox running on Windows XP. Therefore I've added a second all cams page with only Ustream feeds. It is at http://www.iws.org/interactive_nestchat_allUstream.html. There is also a link above the West End cam on the page with the media player streams.

WE 5.59
K87 flies in from the right......more like she hopped up to the nest ???

6.00
She watches out over the rock to the left. K01 flies in from the left. Lots of conversation as he lands. K87 begins to pick in the nest. K01 moves around the rim toward the front to get to the bowl.

6.01
K87 turns to face him as he works in the bowl. Some beaking. K87 begins to dig in the bowl, K01 starts to move to the rear, but stops along side her.

6.02
K87 can't help herself. She tugs on K01s wing feathers, he moves to the rear. She continues to pick in the bowl. K01 looks all around. She back her tail into K01, he moves slightly to the rock and picks around.

6.03
K01 hops to the rock, K87 follows.

WE - They work on the nest....K01 still gets a little nervous when she/K87 gets right up close to him. They start to beak, but it didn't really quite happen.

6.02 - K87 gently touched K01's wing and it made him nervous? He retreats to the rear and she digs in the nest bowl. I suppose she did want him out of her way and knows how to accomplish that task.

K01 jumps to the rock at 6.03 and K87 follows him up there. She stares at the rock and K01 looks around a bit. They look at each other. Don't seem on alert, just nicer for K01 on the rock, my take on it.

They are trumpeting now....6.04. No audio still. Lots of trumpeting on the rock....by both eagles....wow, K87 really goes to town. Throws her had back.

6.05 - they look around and K01 shakes out his feathers. They are quiet.

WE 6.04
K01 begins to preen, K87 watches him closely. Then they begin to call and trumpet. Lots more conversation. K87 trumpets and trumpets, K01 cackles and cackles.

6.05
They begin to look around. K01 shakes out his feathers, K87 keeps her eyes on him.

6.06
They go back to watching outward. K87 leans toward K01 to peck at him. K01 leans back a bit and watches her. Always on guard with her.

6.07
They watch outward again

WE - 6.06 - K87 faces K01...guess they're just looking around...didn't see a beaking, but there is a good distance between them.

6.07 - K87 loks over her shoulder to the right and she watches the rear. I think K01 is vocalizes as they face each other. His beak was open. Guess they're watching something? I don't know.

K01 watches over her shoulder at 6.08.

WE 6.08
Their attention is drawn to the right front. They both watch they sky and track

6.09
K87 turns to face the right. She begins to whine, then hops to the nest. K01 turns and watches as she whines and whines. Then she hops back to the rock. She face left at rock rear. K01 watches down the front.

6.10
K01 begins to preen, K87 watches rear

WE - 6.09 - K87 turns to face right on the rock and then jumps to the nest floor. She turns to look up at K01...then she soon jumps back to the rock, but on the OTHER side of him this time. She is at the far end of the rock toward the rear.

K01 may have preened...have a distraction here. Sorry. They both look around and at 6.11 they both call out and watch below them, mostly. Calls did not last long.
