Hello Dr. Sharpe,
Since bonding is occurring on the WE nest does this mean the window for Wray's return has passed?
Would an eagle not return to its mate for a nesting season? I realize we may never know what actually happened but in your expert opinion what do you think?
Thanks so much.

Nothing is set until there are eggs laid, but the fact that she hasn't shown up yet indicates that she probably won't show up. As we've seen with other nests, females can come in and disrupt a breeding attempt and take over the territory. Given that Wray was 27 years old, I think that is unlikely to happen in this case.

Thank you Dr. Sharpe.
Do you think, given her age and that injury she had that she is still alive? Please excuse the directness of that question. I don't want to come across as insensitive I am really just curious. I just was wondering since it is her territory that if she was ok, she would be there wouldn't she?
Thanks again. :)

She is likely dead, but I think it would be more related to age than injury, at least the injury she got in August. There is still a chance that she was driven away by K-87, much like A-48 drove away A-27 on the Sauces nest last year. Wray looked fine the last time we saw her on October 1 and we watched her for a couple of hours. She was standing on the "injured" leg/foot and scratching her head with the other foot, and then she went and caught a fish.

:'( I am so very sad as I have just read this post. I really loved her. Where do eagles go when they die? When she stopped by the nest in January, was she. Saying good bye? Sorry for the sentiment, but feel blessed to have seen her be a mom one last time. It truly was an honor. By the way, where are the juvies, Bella and her siblings?

I haven't commented in a long time, but have been watching the forum almost daily. Sadly, that is pretty much what I think happened too: she would have shown up by now if she were still alive.

The fact that we'll likely never know what happened to her, in one sense, may be as it should be. Wray was a wild bird. She lived almost all of her life free in the wild. It's appropriate that she should simply disappear back into the wild. I've no doubt that's what Wray, if she "thought" in such a fashion, would have wanted.

Farewell, Queen of the Catalina Eagles! You lived an extraordinary life! You will not be forgotten. <3 Your children are carrying on your tremendous legacy.
