2014 Nesting Season!

The TH nest of ... K-81/m & K-82/f has 1 chick that hatched on March 24th and was banded on May 15th as K-43/Shyla(f) and fledged June 14th.

The SC nest of ... A-40/m & A-48/f ... had ONE egg ... laid February 15th. (Egg lost February 22nd ... cause unknown)
........................ Another egg laid March 16th, but an unfortunate accident with a stick caused A-48 to step on and break this egg within a half hour.

At the WE nest there has been a pairs change. Wray/f was last sighted on Oct 1/13. On Oct 22/13 K-87/f visited the nest and from Oct 25/13 started to follow K-01/m. She appeared to be the new female at the nest until April 5/14 when she was ousted by her nestmate/sister K-91/f.
No eggs were laid this season.

Fledgling K-43 is still returning to her TH nest so please continue to post observations in the usual way .. should you observe a food drop .. it would be helpful to all of us if the time(s) could also be noted/posted .. along with whatever else you observe happening on the nest at that time.

Times of events/changes on a nest are a great help to those of us who video when we are editing the footage.

Remember Dr. Sharpe has indicated in the past that he also wants us to simply enjoy the experience of watching all the happenings on the nests and learn more about these magnificent birds through the wonder of the Nest Cams.

Just a few Gentle Reminders about posting on this thread. (Helps to save time when reading through it.)

Please remember that it is the CHANNEL ISLANDS NESTS ONLY ... either on or off camera ... that we post our observations/comments about.

There are FOUR IWS nests with cameras online ... so it is important to know WHICH NEST you are observing.

Please put the Initials at the start of your post.

Thanks!

“A request from Dr. Sharpe”

Eagle Guy,Mar 28 2011

We are recording the activity at the Two Harbors and West End nests so that we can identify all the prey brought to the nests to calibrate the results of the nest excavations at the end of the season. I'd appreciate if you could continue to report the times that prey are brought to the nest so that later we can go through the recordings more quickly to identify the items. Thanks.

Maybe prey delivery posts could be started with  >>: even if it is a bird or unidentified,  so that we can spot them more easily.

To make it easier for the biologists to see the prey deliveries, please limit the use of the blue fish to prey deliveries only.

Begin your post with the nest initials, followed by the time of delivery & the blue fish.

We are recording prey deliveries at all the online nests, so please continue to use the blue fish for deliveries at any nest.

Thank you!

"The operation on K-46 appears to have gone well. Both tibias are now pinned and she will have at least a 6 week recovery."

July 8, 2014
"K-46 broke the pins and had to have another surgery on Saturday. We should be getting her back to care for her this week."

July 11, 2014
"K-46 is back on Catalina and we'll be caring for her for the next month or two. She will have another x-ray of her legs in a few weeks to determine whether the vet can start removing the pins. There will be more info in future updates."

BRINGING FORWARD:

<::: Posted on the IWS Facebook page...

July 1, 2014

" I've gone through the first 25 names that were drawn in the Nest Adoption Challenge. Although many never responded with their preferences, I have given out 6 of 25 tours, the naming rights to the Pelican Harbor chicks and the Two Harbors chick, the prints of Wray and Superman, and 3 other items. I'll try to get through everything this week and start sending out items next week."

July 2, 2014
"Another 25 names drawn this morning. There are still 10 tours and 10 chicks to be named, among other gift items, to be awarded."

July 3, 2014
"I've now gone through the first 100 names drawn. All the tours and eagle namings have been distributed, but I still have 22 of the gift items and 20 DVDs left, so there are still plenty of opportunities (there were a total of 153 people that contributed)."

July 7, 2014
"I've gone through all the names of people that donated and still have 23 things to give away, so I'll throw all the names back in the hat and start over."

<::: The 2014 IWS eaglets are being named!

A-91, the Malva Real female, was named "Shania", Native American meaning 'on my way'.
A-92, the Pelican Harbor male, was named "Liberty" by debs, in honor of the freedom we enjoy in both Canada & the U.S.
A-97, the Fraser Point male, is "Maxiwo", which means 'bald eagle' in Chumash.
A-98, the Fraser Point female (accidentally tagged the same as the Pelican Harbor female), is "Glory", named after my dear Glory Girl black lab, the toughest dog ever.
A-98, the Pelican Harbor female, is "Malibu", which is Chumash for 'where the surf sounds loudly'.

The Cueva Valdez chick (too young for wingblings) is " 'alow (pronounced e lo), Chumash for 'White Cloud'.

K-41, the Seal Rocks male, is "Kilakila", (pronounced key-la key-la). In Hawaiian, Kila means 'high place, strong and bold' and repeated means 'majestic'.
K-43, the Two Harbors female, is "Shyla", which means 'Daughter of the Mountain'.
