Hello All It has been totally frantic around here all week. I've tried to check in late at night but I may have missed a day or two. My sister from CO flew in Tuesday for a week. It was pouring rain and I had a class so Wes volunteered to go pick her up. Ontario, so that's close but as he was driving over he hit a huge hole in the road which was covered in water so he could see it and blew out a tire. A guy came running up to him after he pulled over and this guy had blown out two tires. And it seems there was another person pulled over up the road with a blown tire. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!! So Wes calls AAA and me and I left class and went and picked up sister. The next morning I had a Dr. appointment and Wes walked over to "the spot" and they had just finished paving over the spot. Wes found the head guy who was aware of what had happened and supplied the number to call. This was a construction project for some new homes and they had trenched across the road to lay lines and when they filled it in they didn't do a very good job. Wes has called a number of people and it appears we will be reimbursed for at least one tire but we had to put on a new set so hopefully we'll get that. Penny - Welcome back! Glad you have a new computer. I love my new iMac Sandie - Little Cheyenne is too adorable. You are going to have such a wonderful time with her. Have fun. Laurie - Love your new "do". Looks very cute on you and very festive. Enjoyed your pictures of Catalina and the video of K46. Those ravens were too funny. Linda - Brrrrr! You are sure having cold temps. Stay warm. Someone mentioned (Carole, Penny, ??) that maybe we could get a little pre-decorated tree and that's exactly what we did. Saw a little 2' 8" at Home Depot when I went to get light bulbs Monday night and called Wes and we decided what the heck it wasn't much so now we have a tree. The great thing is I don't have to take a tree down before our trip. Just put this one in the box. |

Forgot to mention that with all the wonderful rain we have had this past week (almost 4.5 inches ) the ants came into the house. First into the hall bath which my sister is using and then yesterday morning just as I was leaving for the next 12 hours I found ants all over my desk. Last night when we finally got home I vacuumed like crazy and sprayed one spot where I saw the most ants. So far today, no ants. Wes is outside spraying around the entire perimeter of the house. We may have more rain next weekend and I don't want any more ants inside the house. I did find a tiny piece of Adam's favorite cracker under my desk so that's probably why they chose my office to come into. Have to have a little talk with Adam about eating in Grandma's office. |

KATIE...We all were so worried for your Sister...such a traumatic weather event....I remember the pictures of the ravine right at the edge of her home...threatening to fall away...with her house! I remember too you and your brother and other family members flying there to help her make repairs. So glad she is still happily in her home and spared the nightmare of a total loss. So much to be grateful for , for sure! |

From our Laguna Beach newspaper....More local weather news...our very own Laguna weatherman posted this synopsis of the past delightful weather event we just had....thought some of you many find it interesting too. A great soaker and more to come What a great soaker! We tallied up about 1.6 inches and it soaked in really well as the 30 hour event never got heavy, just light to moderate rainfall, here in Laguna Beach. Some foothill communities weren’t so lucky as 4-5 inches drenched the areas near the Colbie fire above Glendora. Residents were well prepared however as news of the approaching storm were broadcast days ahead. The storm was tropical in nature as snow levels were as high as 8,000-8,500 ft. Up north, the Bay Area has collected nearly five inches of rain since the first and that’s more than they got in all of 2013! Mammoth was in the snow zone and collected 2-3 ft. Almost the entire state got in on the action with lots more to come in about a week. The next pulse of energy could even be stronger than the one we just had. Look for its arrival around the 12th or so. The next storm will be approaching from a higher latitude and that means colder and more unstable air will be in the mix, which will drop snow levels significantly in our local mountains. This coming Saturday, December 6 and 7, mark the 16-year anniversary of the big flood of December 1998. A whopping total of 8.08 inches fell during that two day event. The core of this hyper upper level low drifted directly over Laguna resulting in our town collecting more rain than any other city in Southern California. Relentless bands of strong to severe thunderstorms hammered Laguna from Around 1-8 a.m. on Saturday the sixth. That year....In that short seven hour span a total of 6.85 inches fell and an additional 1.23 inches fell on and off until well into Sunday afternoon! Laguna Canyon and downtown were buried in knee-deep mud and debris. The moisture laden low was a product of a powerful El Niño event in high gear. Ocean temps were still a balmy 66 degrees in early December of that year. That mega El Niño ended up with Laguna’s wettest season on record, amassing over 37 inches for the 1997-98 season with a record 15 inches in February, 1998. Four inches fell on February 23 alone with 19 of that 28 day month reporting measurable precipitation. Coming up on December 8-12 will see the earliest sunset of the year at 4:42 p.m. The latest sunrise at our latitude occurs from December 29-January 10 occurring at 6:58 a.m. Beginning on January 9 the sun will set after 5 p.m. The shortest day will be on December 22 with 9h and 54 minutes with the sun rising at 6:54 a.m. that day and the sunset occurring at 4:48 p.m. so that’s 9 hours and 54 minutes. Our longest day occurs on June 21 with the sunrise at 5:42 a.m. and sunset at 8:07 p.m. so that’s 14h 25 min. Daylight Savings will return on Sunday, March 9, 2015 and the further north you go, the more sun time and the opposite is true on the winter solstice with less sun time the further north you go. |
