The pond is very shallow this year so I'm not expecting too many visiting critters, hope it changes. Finished all the grocery shopping yesterday and it's a good feeling to have a full pantry, fridge and freezer. We went to Costco as soon as it opened Sunday, and by the time we left, the parking lot was full. Good timing on our part. Mina - Hope your DD feels better and gets her health issue resolved soon. Praline - You look great, love the new hair Karen - Hope your plumbing problems get fixed soon

Hi Carole, how are you doing? That is a long drive. Time for a time out and rest up! Hope the two nests don't get hit with a lot of snow at hatch time! Take care!

Hi Marti - All is well here. Both these nests are in Florida, one in the northeast and one just 1-1/2 hour drive south of us, so snow will not be a problem. We will visit the Fort Myers nest when the chicks hatch can't wait.

Good Morning from the plant pot owls Peeps ![]() It has cooled off today -11C/12F currently but hoping for a high of -1C/19F. Still overcast though, so the downside of all the warmer weather is that it is dismal looking instead of the bright blue skies we are used to seeing. The little creatures have been very active gathering nuts and digging caches for their treasures and the birds are enjoying the milder temps too ![]() |

CAROL..What a breathtaking sight that must have been , exiting church and flocks of Snow Geese flying overhead! What a nice surprise to have Carolers come to sing...I am sure you neighbors were thrilled also. A long long time ago...back in PA....when I sang in our church choir...we did the same thing in the immediate neighborhood of the church....also as a Girl Scout we went Caroling also. It made so many folks happy when we arrived at their doors.JILL...The of the tree is lovely...I think it is a Liquid Amber....one our beautiful trees in SoCal that actually do give us brilliant Fall color. I have saved your posting about DDay for later...to view.Today is a fun day for my neighbor and I...we are going to lunch to celebrate her 71st . We always celebrate each others special day together. We are heading to Fashion Island , having lunch at Neiman's and then enjoy all the lovely decorations. More Rain coming in tonight... and thru tomorrow. Not a wicked storm this time...just good rain.

I hope she okay because the last time I remember seeing a post from her she was not feeling well ![]() Carol you are so lucky to see the phenomena of the annual bird migrations so close to where you live. Great to hear that carollers still do singing door to door too Jill OMG that Russian dashboard cams montage was really crazy I had to send it to DH and DS !!!

While many smaller species of birds have left the park for warmer climes, the Common Raven (Corvus corax) is content to spend the winter here. Ravens nest in high elevations throughout the Appalachians, often on cliffs and rock ledges. You may see them taking advantage of strong updrafts along the mountains to display their aerial acrobatics. Individuals may turn somersaults or do "barrel rolls." Pairs may fly swiftly in unison, rising and falling like roller coasters. Such displays often occur between pairs in late winter, as they re-establish their bond near the nest site. Ravens are sometimes confused with the more abundant American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos). Ravens, however, are larger, averaging 24 inches (60 cm.) long, compared to 17 inches (44 cm.) for Crows. If you get close enough, you may see the distinctive shaggy throat feathers of the Raven. In flight, Raven tails have a diamond or wedge shape, compared to the fan shape of Crow tails. Unlike Crows, Ravens often glide in their flight between flapping wing strokes. Their vocalizations are different, as well. Instead of the "caw" of the Crow, the Raven call sounds more like "gronk." Ravens are confident birds, sometimes chasing Crows away from food. Ravens primarily eat carrion, but will take nestlings of other bird species, as well as eggs, rodents, insects, seeds and fruit. Ravens retain the same mate every year, and usually begin courtship activity in February. They make large stick nests, 3 to 5 ft. (1 to 1.5 m.) in diameter, where they raise one brood of 3 to 5 young. Instead of taking sticks from the ground to add to their nests, Ravens are more likely to break off dead branches (up to 3 ft. long) from trees. Shenandoah Nat'l Park |
