From the all nest chat page there has been talk about wanting to name the West End eaglet Bub or Bubbie. Out of respect for The Montrose Settlement facebook page they has made a choice Not to name the chick. The loss of the West End chick yesterday was heartbreaking and we thank Dr. Sharpe for his efforts to try and save the chick. Despite this loss, we still have much to celebrate this season. Less than a decade after the first natural hatch on Santa Cruz Island in 2006, we will surpass the milestone of over 100 Bald Eagle chicks to naturally hatch and fledge from the Channel Islands. This success would not have been possible without our many wonderful partners. In particular, we would like to recognize the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) who has worked tirelessly on this restoration program for 35 years. David Garcelon, as a graduate student, had the original vision to restore the Bald Eagle back to the islands. He was instrumental in the Montrose litigation case and continues to support the restoration program on many levels. Dr. Peter Sharpe has dedicated the last 18 years to the eagle project and his leadership and dedication have been invaluable. We would also like to thank the IWS field crews for their hard work and many long hours in the field. (Out of respect for the West End chick, we are not going to announce a name of the 100th chick to fledge from the islands,) but we will continue to celebrate this great milestone. Thank you to everyone who participated in our naming contest and for all of the very thoughtful names submitted, including ones that honored the dedication of David Garcelon and Peter Sharpe to this project. The name Bub or Bubbie has pretty much been used as a nickname for the young Eaglets. In my opinion, I'm not sure this is the way to go. We should respect The Montrose Settlement and not bother Dr. Sharpe about naming this one.
