Name: Silas Townsend Alias: Master of Ceremonies Age: 21 Gender: Male Class: Valkyrie Ability: Sublimation. Silas has the ability to change from a solid state to a gaseous one, and vice versa. When Silas concentrates, the changes are instantaneous, although he usually prefers to sublime in a slower and more dramatic fashion. If there isn't enough space for him to become solid again then he obviously can't do so, but if the force of the sublimation creates room then it is possible for him to do so. Silas cannot become 'completely' solid however; for some reason his first sublimation caused him to lose his sense of touch. He usually chooses to remain in a semisolid state wherein he still keeps his human form but is comprised of gas instead (though through some clever manipulation of pressure and density he can still hold objects in this state). Orientation: Straight. Other I: Silas is fluent in BSL (British Sign Language) as well as English. He hasn't encountered many people in Graywater who sign, so he uses it to his advantage and has gotten into the habit of expressing his true thoughts through sign language while he speaks. To anyone who doesn't sign, he tells them that he's merely signing what he's saying so the skills stay fresh. If he encounters somebody who does sign (and coincidentally also uses BSL), he sensibly refrains from signing how he really feels. Other II: Silas acts as the Master of Ceremonies for the tournaments held at the Underground Ring. He emcees all the events, presents the prizes, encourages the crowd to be as enthusiastic as possible, and generally speaking acts as a talent scout for the Valkyries; passing on names to his superiors in return for little amenities that will make him more comfortable with his living quarters. Physical Appearance: Silas is of average height (he stands at about 5'4), and appears to be of average build as well. Technically, he weighs less than a pound due to the fact that he's a gaseous entity, but his appearance in no way indicates this. Despite the fact that he has to go through the same copious amounts of training as everyone else, his figure never changes, which has made Silas both a source of envy and mockery; cursed to never build any muscle or gain or lose weight. He doesn't seem too fazed by this though - he's content with his figure. Silas maintains that his hands are his best features though; his fingers are long and tapered and he has surprisingly dainty-looking wrists which gives his signing an almost elegant quality to it. Silas has high, pronounced cheekbones which make his face seem longer than it actually is. Coupled with a beaky nose and the near-permanent look of smug superiority he manages to maintain, he looks almost like the masterminding antagonist of a cheap horror film. Depending on the situation, Silas' choice in clothes means that most people don't usually associate Silas the Valkyrie with Silas the Master of Ceremonies. When he's emceeing the tournaments, Silas chooses to dress neatly in a pinstriped suit and a top hat with a green band that matches his eyes. Occasionally he brings with a minimalist black cane that he uses to put on more of a show for the crowd, but whether he uses it or not depends on his mood. His auburn hair is neatly combed so it is just visible under the brim of the top hat, and there is a ballpoint pen tucked into the band of the hat that Silas uses to make notes on the fights. At pretty much any other time, Silas' dress sense is a lot less stylish. He usually just wears an unintentionally faded shirt and a pair of jeans that he is quite prone to shoving his hands into. Similarly to his 'stage outfit,' Silas will normally wear a hat, albeit one quite different from the top hat. Usually it's just a beanie pulled down over his ears, varying in colour from day to day. Personality: Silas is quite a cold person, to the extent that he has actually been accused of having a schizoid personality. He vehemently denies this, stating that he simply doesn't have much interest in the day-to-day lives of most of the people he encounters. A more accurate word would be 'disillusioned' - Silas hasn't been able to physically feel anything for most of his life and has given up hope that he will ever be able to 'feel' again. Silas uses this excuse to rationalise the radical feelings of envy that any profuse displays of physical contact stir up within him, and unhealthily bottles up this jealousy until it becomes a milky, curdled rage that causes him to feel more envious, and the vicious cycle keeps on repeating. Despite this, Silas is always calm and rational, although he has little patience for people who can't hold intelligent conversation. Silas is a natural performer, and when he's acting out his role as Master of Ceremonies, he comes across as simultaneously cocky and charming. Surprisingly enough, if you catch him off guard and when he considers himself to be alone, he's quite a different person. He is an incredibly insecure and surprisingly modest young man. The hatred and jealousy of fully-corporeal people still shines through, but he tries to justify it with half-truths and the forced belief that sublimation has genuinely made his life better. Background: Silas' parents separated when he was fairly young, so he grew up in two different households. His mother remarried and started a new life with her second husband and his two kids, and although Silas was always treated like a genuine member of the family he could tell that he was a third wheel and that realistically he was just imposing on his mother's new life. Silas much preferred his time with his father, Conrad. The man was supportive and encouraging, and appreciated his time with his son. Thing was, Conrad never spoke. Silas' father was a mutant who had remained outside of the system by suppressing his power and feigning a 'normal' disability instead. Instead of 'Conrad, the man with a vortex in his mouth,' he was 'Conrad, the mute.' Conrad taught his son sign language and 'talked' to him through that instead, and when Silas' sublimation started to manifest, his father supported him and convinced him that no matter what, things would be alright. Silas appreciated the gesture, and felt more at ease with his father despite having more chores to do because of his honesty. One day, Silas got into a heated fight with his step-brother which resulted in Silas' left arm being broken. When Conrad saw Silas walk into the house in a cast and a sling, he snapped and signed for Silas to stay at home while he 'sorted things out' with his ex-wife and her new children. That was the last time Silas had ever seen either of his parents. Apparently Conrad had broken his 'vow of silence' and used the vortex in his mouth to suck in his wife, her husband, their children and their house before putting his hand into the vortex and allowing himself to vanish into oblivion. Feeling both stranded and betrayed, Silas willingly submitted himself to Graywater believing that it was the haven that was promised. It wasn't what he had expected, but it was better than nothing. A few years down the track (by this time he was a fairly well established Valkyrie) he was offered the position of Master of Ceremonies after the previous one was killed during a move by some renegade mutants, and he happily accepted. He has been emceeing now for about two or three years, and has lasted longer than expected, surviving quite a few attacks on his life. Edited by Vers, Feb 15 2010, 07:24 AM.
