What does it mean when critics acro s the nation are calling out the NFL Players A sociation for Greg Hardy still playing in the NFL, and demanding that the union does something to get him and others like him out of the league? It means that everybody has given up on the NFL itself, and its teams like, oh, for example, the Cowboys to do the right thing. Gabe Jackson Jersey MORE: Jerry Jones' history of enabling | 'Humiliated' Greg Hardy feared facing teammates But at least the union is trying to do its job. It's the NFLPA's responsibility to make sure players are punished fairly. The idea that its their job to put Hardy where he belongs (wherever that is), or do the disciplining itself, or to be a rubber stamp for the NFL based solely on how reprehensiblethe punished player may be is wrong. So, so wrong.Inexcusably wrong, because anybody who says that in 2015 ought to know better about how sports unions work, and why players have to have them. Even players like Hardy. The union is the last barrier to the league running amok with discipline and thats exactly what the NFL has done, for years, especially for the last 16 months, particularly on domestic-violence i sues. How on earth anyone has to be reminded of that is mind-boggling.Its as if Ray Rice is out of sight and out of mind, and Adrian Peterson is fully in sight but equally out of mind. Hey, folks, Tom Brady isnt the only player the union has battled the NFL over a random, arbitrary, pulled-out-of-thin-air punishment. Two games for punching your fiance! No, indefinite ban Carl Banks Jersey for the exact same thing from a different camera angle! No, exempt list! No, a full year! Wait, the dice bounced off the table, how many games is that? Maybe, sorta, kinda knowing who deflated footballs when, that's the same as doping, right?MORE: Make Cowboys pay, keep Greg Hardy on the field | Should Hardy expect more extra mustard? The unions default position these days is that the NFL makes this stuff up as it goes along and a sumes it has the right to. Various judges and arbitrators keep proving the NFL wrong.Yet, because Hardy continues to make himself Cameron Sutton Jersey so publicly vile, hes an exception the union is supposed to wave off.George Attalah, the unions a sistant executive director for external affairs often the voice of the NFLPA when it needs one had to walk the football world through the topic last week. He could have done it twoweeks ago when NBCs broadcasters threw them into the blame category during the Eagles-Cowboys prime-time game.By now in the evolution of player-management relations, holding everyones hand and explaining labor history shouldnt still be nece sary. The answer to Why has Greg Hardy been allowed to play all this time, and why is he allowed back in at all? doesnt have the word union in it at all.Roger Goodell could have handed down a serious suspension and had it stand if hedbanked any credibility at all since last summer. He hasn't, as everyone in the sports universe ought to be aware by now.And regardle s of how long Goodell had suspended him, and how much the union had reduced it by arbitration, the reason Hardy is playing now still is the same as it was last spring: the Nick Vannett Jersey Cowboys and Jerry Jones signed him.Maybe everyone is getting tired of jabbing a finger at Goodell and Jones, the way NBA voters got tired of giving Michael Jordan the MVP every year. Maybe blaming the people who are there to push back against management and ownership tyranny is just a nice change of pace. That sure doesnt make it right. How the union protects players isnt what needs a ma sive overhaul here. But the football world has banged its head against that wall for a year and a half. The wall keeps winning.Banging it against a different wall wont help. Its not that the union is wrong. Its that everyone whos really wrong cant be trusted to be right.
