Back in 1992 I had just passed my test and as I'm a non conformist, instead of buying an XR3I, XR2,Nova SRI etc etc, I bought a 1971 Austin 1300 GT. I loved the little car to bit's, and while I was washing it one sunday one of your guy's stopped in a 30's Austin van and asked if I wanted to join your motley crew and bring the 1300 to LFT. When I said 'But this is a rough as hell' the answer was 'It's allright, just tell em it's a running restoration' I joined at the next Heath and Reach meeting and continued on and off sinse. The reason... The CVPG is not full of 'classic car snobs' who I can't stand, sneering and passing comments because the vehicle you drive isn't pristine. It's about keeping the vehicles roadworthy, the meetings are great and people, I have found' to be very approachable. A lot of car clubs won't entertain my Austin 1800 because allthough it's never been welded or restored, it's classed as a crap car that no one likes ! The best comment I heard at the LFT was from the arena, the B Series engine club were there, here's how the conversation went over the PA... "We are the B Series club and we welcome any vehicle with a B Sreies engine" The MC then said... "That's very interesting, so MG's, Marina's etc, all of the above ?" B Series guy said "Yes, we welcome them all" MC said So what about if someone wanted to join with an Austin 1800 ?" Bseries guy said " ER NO !" quite disgusted that the MC had even asked ! But the CVPG welcomes all, and I say ... More power to it, let's make things interesting, if all classic enthusiasts had the same vehicles it'd be very boreing at the shows ! Thanks Dave W |
