It was pointed out to me on the run to Oxford bus museum in April tht my flashers were rather fast and the light was bearly going out each flash. I have recently changed the flasher unit and that made no difference. I have cleaned all the bulb contacts and earths, and all bulbs are flashing. I am puzzled as to what to do next. Any ideas? |

I assume you are using an electro mechanical flasher and not a modern electronic one. Indicator flasher units work on the current drawn by the bulbs to heat a bimetal strip, causing a contact to open, and when it rapidly cools, it closes, giving you the flash, check to see that all the bulb wattages are the same, lower wattage globes will cause the unit to flash slower, higher wattage, faster, ie more currentdrawn faster flash, Have you got side repeaters and a flasher not designed to run them, or dashboard warning lights etc.. Normally it's the earthing on the bulbs as this will cause the symptoms but you say you've checked that.. Sorry not much help. |

You've not said which car. Is the flasher unit definitely the right one? Truthfully there is not much variety in them, and bimetalic ones usually go slower not faster with age. Too fast implies too much current is being drawn, and again, its not that common as bad contacts would cause the reverse. Likewise, naughty wiring might blow the fuse! Left and right turn the same? If so, fault is something common between them. Other than check the unit against similar cars, and peruse the wiring diagram can't really say more at this stage. Martyn |

Thanks for answers though no real change. Car is Spitfire 1500 and has standard 2 pin cylindrical flasher. One new from Halfords and another old stock 50p from stall at Kensworth. Both are identical in their action and both sides of the car flash the same. Well I guess I will just leave it. It passed MOT this year like it! |

On and fast flashing dirty light sockets or partial ground. Upgrading to a modern elecronic flasher is easy. Most cars (e.g. Ford Escort/Fiesta/Sierra, Vauxhall Corsa/Vectra/Cavalier/Astra) use the same standard flasher which is almost a direct replacement for the thermal type relay - you just have to provide an extra earth lead. |
