CWF/AWA MID-ATLANTIC "NIGHT OF THE MID-ATLANTIC LEGENDS" 2/5/05 SEAGROVE, NC This is a new tape I just got in from CWF Mid-Atlantic. I figure you guys won't know most of these workers, so I'm gonna skip the play-by-play and just give you a basic idea of what happened, and who was involved. First impression: Nice crowd. Probably close to 1,000, and the arena looks full. This was apparently billed as a CWF supercard event apart from their regular TV show. The promotion payed off, as this crowd is big and hot. The video quality is good, with only a little of the "shaky-handcam" stuff you get on some indies. The sound doesn't come into play really, because not being taped for TV, there is no commentary. Joey Silvia vs. Otto Schwanz Silvia is a solid cruiseweight with a good look. Otto is best known for his work in ECW/WWF as one of the Dupps, but I think this is his original character from Omega. The match plays out nicely with Silvia hitting a lot of the trademark cruiser spots, and he pulls them off cleanly. Otto does his part nicely, but if you haven't seen any of his matches, he does this goofy, drunken, stumbling when he sells that may be distracting. If you've seen his matches it won't be a problem, because you know it's part of his odd character. Silvia gets the pin in just over 13 minutes. I see a lot of potential in Silvia; sadly, though Otto is very solid, if it hasn't happened for him by now, it probably isn't going to. **1/4 Quinson Valentino, Tank Lawson, L.A. Wild One, and "Suicide" Shawn Mayhem vs. Ultra Dragon, Rob Killjoy, "Mighty" Orlo Helmer, and Rising Generation League champion Kid Justice To be honest, this was kind of a mess. If you go to many indy shows, you know there are times at every show where you sit there and think "I payed to see this guy?" Well, a couple of those guys are in this match. That being said, Valentino and Lawson are very good heel heavyweights while Ultra Dragon and Kid Justice are your typical risk-taking cruiserweights. Orlo Helmer (and what kind of name is that?) is big. Really big. He reminds me a bit of Scott Norton in body type. Just that big, brutish "snap me like a twig" look. Not much to say about the match. It wasn't too offensive, but certainly not great. Uh-oh, I can't even remember who won. Doesn't matter: A little under 8 minute match. 1/2* Garry "Madd Trucker" Stevens vs. "Wild" Shane West Stevens has a great Psyco-gimmick, something like Abdullah the Butcher. Unforunately we don't see much of that in this match, and West is just completely bland. Stevens gets the win in 7:35. Pretty much a snoozer. * Gemini Kid, Don, and Rocky Kernodle (with Nikita Koloff in their corner) vs. Alex Adonis, Jay Sinn, and Donnie Dollars (w/ Brad Stutts) This match starts with Stutts cutting a good heel manager promo. He really is good on the mic, and he has a look that you just want to hate the guy. Gemini Kid and the Kernodles are all veterans of this area, with Don being best known for his run in Crockett Promotions with Sargeant Slaughter. All of the heels here are passable, but noone really stands out except the manager. Nikita really does nothing in this match, but of course the crowd is hot for him. He looks really good and healthy, though he is much slimmer now than his "enhanced" days. Don Kernodle wins with a cobra clutch on Donnie Dollars in 10 minutes which is a nice litte piece of nostalgia. ** The Barbarian and Rob "Boggie Woogie Man" McBride vs. "Dangerous E" Corey Edsel and "Red Hot" Tim Blaze with "Boggie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant as the special guest referee The match starts with Valiant passing the torch to Mcbride, who for his part, does a good Boogie-Woogie man impersonation. Lots of comedy early on with plenty of Boogie-Woogie kisses being passed around. The laugh-out-loud moment came when Mcbride planted one on Valiant himself, and this big grin slowly crept across Valiant's face. Then you see him mouth "That was pretty good". Hilarious. Anyway, I do want to mention something about the participants in this match. First, The Barbarian. He's still in incredible shape, and though he can't get around like he used to, he's such a menacing figure that he could still be effective in a small role for a major company. As far as Corey Edsel goes, let me be the first to say, I'm a believer. He's somewhere in the neighborhood of 6' 325lbs of fat, and I think he may be the best big man in the country. This match doesn't showcase Edsel's work very much, but I dare you to find me a guy his size who can move, bump, or sell like he does. He doesn't fit Vince's body type, but this guy is destined for greatness. The highlight of this match is actually a comedy spot. McBride gives Blaze the Boogie kiss, Blaze staggers into Valiant who hands out another Boogie kiss, then Blaze stumbles his way into Barbarian. Barb goes in for the kiss, and the crowd is popping huge, but at the last second, you realize that Barbarian has no plans for kissing a man, and instead he headbutts Blaze. This sequence gets a great crowd response. The match ends in choas with Valiant actually pinning Blaze. Hard to explain, but it was fun to watch. **, but very entertaining. Around 12 minutes. CWF/AWA Mid-Atlantic Television champion Jesse Ortega vs. Gregory Vercetti Ortega is a very solid worker who seems to be able to mix mat work with aerial work quite nicely. This is my first time seeimg Vercetti, and I'm a little confused about his gimmick. It sounded like they announced him from England, but he plays kind of the Full Blooded Italian in the ring. Maybe I just missed something. Regardless, he seems to have potential, and hangs right in there with Ortega in this match. This match is a good transition back to wrestling from the more entertainment oriented match we just witnessed. I definitely want to see more of both of these guys. Work-rate wise, this is the match of the night so far, just edging out the opener. It's just a little smoother, and a little more believable. Ortega in 9-1/2 minutes. **1/2 Sean Powers and Ivan Koloff vs. CWF/AWA Mid-Atlantic tag team champions Brass Munkey and American Steel Ninja in a double chain match with Michael McAllister as the special guest enforcer While it was fun to see Koloff again, and I think Ninja has a ton of potential, the chain match is one of my least favorite gimmick matches. That being said, they didn't do a bad job with it. Koloff takes more beating from Ninja than you'd ever imagine, and there's a good bit of blood going around, if that's your thing. Still, the confines of a chain match really kill it for me. Powers and Kollof win the tag straps in 15 minutes, which would seem like a bad move to me. No way Koloff's gonna be a regular, so you know this will be a short reign. I wish this would have switched place with the TV title match, and take 5 minutes off this to add to the TV title match. I think that would make the card build a little better. *1/2 CWF/AWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight champion "Slick" Ric Converse vs. Brad Attitude The build to this match was great, so my hat is off to whoever booked it. It's hard for an indy to get that "big-event" feel to a match, but this comes off great. I can't give all the credit to the promoter though, because both Converse and Attitude are incredible talents. This match went just over 20 minutes, but I must say, the first half of the match had me scratching my head. It took about 10 minutes for me to realize what kind of story they were telling with this match, but once the halfway point hit, things really started coming together. Loads of one-upsmanship, reversals, and big moves that just missed. A very smart match that has nearly every move playing into the ending, which comes on a reversal and Converse gets the pin. This match wasn't as strong as Converse's 10/2/04 match with Corey Edsel, but it is a very good match nontheless. I hope this is a preview of things to come between these two. It's kind of hard to put into words, but this is the kind of match that adds value to your promotion's title. Slick Ric seems to be churning these out effortlessly. ***3/4 Final Impression: A very solid show for CWF, and it really seems like this promotion is on track for good things. With talent like Converse, Attitude, Edsel, Xsiris, Silvia, Justice, and Ortega, they really have the potential to put on classic matches. A little mutch of the comedy / hillbilly / entertainment stuff for my tastes, but honestly, here in the south, that stuff really goes over with the crowd, so I can't blame them for trying to please their audience. One negative I will mention is that the promoter/ commisioner / ring announcer guy took a lot of mic time, and acted like a tough guy to the heels on a few different occasions. Hopefully, this show was odd in that way as there is nothing worse to me than an indy promoter who thinks the crowd payed to see him, and then ends up weakening some of his talent buy trash-talking them when they can do nothing in return. Oh well, just a small pet-peave of mine, and hopefully this was just a one night occurence for CWF. All in all a very good show. I would reccomend it to anyone, but I'd say to read up on some of the shows before this first, as the booking for the main-event was very solid, and that makes a big difference. |
