So I thought I’d take a different approach to this review. I’m just going to randomly select lone matches on my computer and review them. WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Texas Tornado © vs. Mr. Perfect Ted Dibiase comes out as the special ring announcer meaning it’s probably a screwjob for Von Erich. Lockup and Erich tosses Perfect into the corner. Lockup and Perfect gets an armdrag. Lockup and Perfect gets a bodyslam. Lockup and Perfect backs Erich into the corner and hits a chop. Erich reverses a whip and sends Perfect into the corner and hits a bodyslam and then clotheslines Perfect out of the ring. Even though Erich was a terrible worker at this point I’m always impressed by how mobile he was despite missing a foot. Bobby Heenan tries to give Perfect a pep talk but Erich gives them a double noggin knocker. Lockup and Erich gets a hammerlock. Perfect grabs the hair and backs Erich into the corner and hits a knee. Erich reverses a whip and hits Perfect with a spinning punch to the gut. Erich abuses Perfect in the corner but then charges into a boot. Perfect hammers Erich in the corner and goes for an irish whip. Erich reverses but then misses a charge and crashes into the ringpost. Perfect argues with the ref and Dibiase runs over to punch Erich. Perfect stomps Erich in the ropes and then dropkicks Erich out of the ring. Heenan and Perfect distract the ref so that Dibiase can ram Erich into the ringpost on the outside. Perfect rolls Erich into the ring and hammers on Erich more. Erich reverses a whip but sends Perfect right into the ref. Erich rams Perfect into the corner and then hits the worst finisher ever. Erich covers but the ref is down. Dibiase comes in and hits Erich in the head with the Intercontinental title belt and revives Perfect while Heenan revives the ref. Perfect hits the Perfect-Plex and the ref recovers to give Perfect the pin and title. Terrible match but Erich was basically a disaster in the ring at this point. The history behind this match was Erich had won the title at Summerslam but the WWF became increasingly worried that Erich was going to kill himself so they took the title off of him here. I didn’t want to state that at the beginning in case the winner was in doubt. ¾* WINNER AND NEW CHAMP: Mr. Perfect Val Venis vs. CM Punk Lockup and Val gets a hammerlock. Punk reverses the hold and applies a headlock. Val sends Punk into the ropes but gets hit with a shoulderblock. Back and forth until Val hits a hiptoss. They exchange armdrags followed by Punk getting a takedown for a one count. Val returns the favor for a one count and it’s a stand off. They shake hands. Val turns his back and Punk gets a knee block. Awesome heel move there. Punk immediately pulls Val to the center of the ring and attacks the leg. Punk attacks with several kicks to the leg and elbow drops on the knee. Punk pulls Val’s knee pad down to further attack the knee. Val fights back and abuses Punk with chops in the corner. Punk bails to the outside and trips Val up. Punk works over the leg on the ringpost. Back into the ring as Punk further attacks the knee and even mocks Val’s dance. I might add that Punk goes back to the knee and then applies an anklelock. Val manages to kick Punk off and crawls to the corner. Punk comes in carelessly and gets a knee to the face for his troubles. Punk charges but Val hits him with a clothesline. Val sends Punk into the ropes and hits a backbody drop. Val abuses Punk with clotheslines in the corner and then hits a neckbreaker. Val covers for two. Punk tries to bail but Val catches him and hits some kidney shots. Punk reverses a whip into a sleeper but Val powers out into a sit-out powerbomb for two. Val goes for a fisherman’s suplex but his knee gives out. Punk takes advantage with a drop toe hold and follows it up with an Indian deathlock and a half crab. Val manages to get to the ropes to break the hold. Punk grabs the leg but Val turns it into a half nelson slam. Val climbs to the top and hits the Money Shot for the win. Quite a solid match for Heat. Val and Punk had an amazing chemistry in the ring and I loved the story of the match. The match could’ve used another five minutes though. **1/2 WINNER: Val Venis Virgil vs. Bastion Booger This is from June 1993. Bastion is Mike Shaw who possibly holds the record for being stuck with the worst gimmicks in wrestling. Virgil is probably the biggest missed superstar the WWF had. He was mega over in 91 but they never really gave him a sustained push. Virgil is still drawing decent heat for being a jobber the better part of two years at this point. They circle and Virgil jabs at Booger. Virgil blocks a kick and gets a takedown followed by a headbutt to the groin. Virgil attacks the leg but Booger escapes with a poke to the eyes. Booger sends Virgil to the corner and waddles into a boot. I’m being serious when I say waddle. Virgil charges into a clothesline because Booger basically can’t move much. Booger hammers on Virgil some and sends him into the corner. Virgil gets a float over and runs to the other corner. Virgil jumps to the middle rope but then misses a cross body block. Booger climbs to the middle rope and hits a splash for the pin because every fat guy has to use that as a finisher. Yeah, I felt like throwing some Wrestlecrap on here. DUD WINNER: Bastion Booger WWF Title Match: Bret Hart © vs. the Patriot This is from the Ground Zero PPV in 97. I’ve always liked the Patriot gimmick but never thought he was a good worker. I’m expecting about *** from this as Hart will drag some good stuff out of Patriot . Hart attacks before the bell rings because that’s what heels do. They exchange blows which Hart ultimately wins and he hammers Patriot in the corner. Hart rakes Patriot across the top rope and hammers on him with punches and a headbutt. Hart uses a belly to back suplex and hits the headbutt to the groin. Hart lifts Patriot into a tree of woe and stomps him in the corner. Hart chokes Patriot and taunts the crowd. Hart hammers away some more and chokes Patriot in the corner. Hart argues with the ref after a face rake. Patriot sends Hart into the corner and hits a clothesline. Patriot hits a headbut followed by a dropkick. I have to mention that I absolutely hate the sound the WWF mats made during this time. Way too loud if you ask me. Patriot clotheslines Hart out of the ring and Hart stalls. Back into the ring and Hart gets in the ropes then attacks Patriot argues with the ref. Patriot catches Hart with an armdrag and hits several more before grabbing an arm. Patriot drops a leg on the arm and then rams Hart into the turnbuckle. Patriot applies a hammerlock and further wears down the arm. Hart backs Patriot into the corner and tries to escape with an armdrag but Patriot holds on. Patriot drops some knees on the arm and re-applies the hold. Hart manages to get into the ropes to break the hold. Patriot uses the ropes to work over the arm some more. Hart backs into another corner and stomps the knee when Patriot comes in. Patriot in the corner now as Hart continues to attack the knee. Hart works over the knee on the bottom rope. Hart takes Patriot down and drops elbows on the knee. Flying mare on the knee followed by more work on the bottom rope. Patriot tries to fight back but Hart cuts it short with a face rake. Hart applies a leglock and stomps and elbows the knee. Hart drags Patriot into the corner and applies the ringpost figure-four. Hart slams Patriot’s knee into the post before getting back into the ring. Hart headbutts the kidneys as the British Bulldog comes down to ringside. Hart hits a Russian leg sweep and covers for two. Hart hits a backbreaker because its five moves of doom time. Patriot blocks a suplex and hits a vertical suplex. Patriot hammers on Hart and gets a sunset flip for two. Patriot hits a DDT and covers for two. Patriot punishes Hart in the corner but charges into a boot after a charge. Hart comes off the middle rope with a double axehandle but gets met with a fist to the gut. Patriot comes off the ropes and hits a clothesline. He goes to the ropes again but the British Bulldog trips him up. I was surprised when he didn’t do it the first time. Patriot yells at Bulldog but gets rolled up for two. They exchange blows until Patriot pushes Hart into Bulldog. Hart turns to look at Bulldog but Patriot gets a schoolboy for two. Patriot ducks a punch and hits a full nelson slam. Patriot covers but Bulldog breaks it up. Patriot rolls out and threatens harm to the Bulldog. Vader comes out and evens the odds by attacking Bulldog. Bulldog gets double teamed until Hart comes out and a big brawl erupts. Vader whips Hart into the ringsteps and rolls him back into the ring. Hart begs off but Patriot abuses him in the corner. Patriot hits a headbutt followed by a big boot. Patriot uses a body slam and hits a shoulder tackle from the top rope. Patriot hits an atomic drop followed by a belly to back suplex. Patriot covers for two. Hart hits a stun gun. Hart hits a bulldog out of the corner and hits an elbow off the middle rope. Hart covers for two. They take turns beating on each other in the corner. Patriot accidentally hits the ref while punching Hart. Patriot escapes a full nelson and hits a full nelson slam. Patriot covers but Hart gets a foot on the ropes. Back and forth until they collide with shoulders. Hart gets a waistlock but Patriot shakes him off with the ropes. They exchange inside cradles for two. Patriot whips Hart into the corner with power. Patriot decides to get cute and applies the Sharpshooter. Hart grabs a leg and manages to turn it into his own Sharpshooter. Patriot holds on for a bit but eventually taps so that Hart can retain the title. Excellent selling in this match. I almost forgot how limited the Patriot was as a seller during the match. *** WINNER AND STILL CHAMP: Bret Hart WWF Title Match: Ultimate Warrior © vs. Mr. Perfect Mr. Perfect is currently the Intercontinental Champion when this match happened. I’m guessing this was around Summerslam. Perfect attacks while Warrior plays to the crowd. Warrior no sells and pushes Perfect into the corner. Warrior chops Perfect right out of the ring. Warrior takes the belt off with the break. Warrior goes to the outside and chops Perfect before rolling him into the ring. Warrior hits a bunch of shoulderblocks before shaking the ropes. Warrior tosses Perfect to the outside and wanders around the ring like an idiot. Warrior pulls Perfect into the ring and face plants him. Warrior clotheslines Perfect out of the ring. Warrior chops Perfect on the outside before rolling him back into the ring. Warrior repeatedly smashes Perfect’s head into the turnbuckle. Warrior sends Perfect into the corner and tosses him. Warrior goes for the big splash but Perfect moves. Perfect pounds on the fallen Warrior and pushes him outside. Perfect rams Warrior into the timekeeper’s table and then hits him with the WWF Title belt. Perfect hits a chop and then rolls Warrior into the ring. Perfect hammers away but Warrior starts shaking. Perfect hits a dropkick but Warrior’s doing the retard dance now. Perfect tries various moves but can’t do any damage. Perfect manages to get him down with a fist off the top rope. Perfect hits the Perfect-Plex but Warrior kicks out. Warrior runs over Perfect with clothesline and comes off the ropes with a shoulder tackle. Warrior hits the big splash for the pin and to keep his title. Good energy for the match and hey at least it was short. *1/2 WINNER AND STILL CHAMP: Ultimate Warrior Demolition vs. Ultimate Warrior and the Legion of Doom I did all WWF up to this point so I might as well keep the theme alive. I’ll do a shortie to make it an even six for this review. Crush is with Demolition by this point so this is the lame version of the team. Both teams cut a promo for the pre-match stuff. Warrior and the LOD clear the ring before the match. Smash and Animal start the match. Smash quickly gains control with a sneak attack. He punishes Animal with shots and chokes him on the middle rope. Back and forth until Animal hits a powerslam and covers for two. Animal drops an elbow but Smash escapes after a cheap shot. Ax tags in but gets a kick from Animal. Warrior tags in and stomps Ax in the corner. Ax reverses a whip but then charges into a boot. Warrior runs over Ax with shoulderblocks and a clothesline. I’d also like to mention that you could really notice that Ax’s health was going downhill here. Smash and Crush come in but Warrior bodyslams both of them. Ax gets bodyslammed but then ducks the big splash. Smash tags in and abuses Warrior with double axehandles. Smash tosses Warrior to the outside where Crush adds further punishment. Back into the ring as Crush and Smash continue to double team. Ax tags in and hammers Warrior in the corner. Crush tags in and hits a double axehandle off the top rope. Crush and Warrior choke each other until Crush gets a cheap shot. Smash tags in and punishes Warrior in the corner. Demolition triple teams in the corner until Animal comes in and makes the save. Smash pushes Animal to the outside. Ax and Smash go for Decapitation but Hawk breaks it up. Hawk tags in and hits Smash with an elbow. Hawk comes off the ropes with a shoulder tackle. Hawk drops a fist followed by a top rope clothesline. Hawk knocks Ax and Crush to the outside and tags Warrior in. Warrior runs over Smash with clotheslines and clotheslines Ax off the apron. Warrior clotheslines Smash again and shakes the ropes. The LOD brawls with Ax and Crush on the outside as Warrior comes off the ropes with a shoulder tackle. Big splash finishes it for the good guys. Not a terrible match. It wasn’t good or anything but it was short and inoffensive. * WINNERS: Ultimate Warrior and the Legion of Doom Overall: A good way to kill some time with unwatched stuff on my computer. Nothing great but the really bad match was only two minutes and the Warrior matches were only six minutes each. |

Is that last match from Saturday Night's Main Event (October '90) or MSG (9/21/90)? That combination had many matches and both matches had the same finish IIRC. Those matches were pretty random... Booger v. Virgil?! Blech |

Y'know, I always thought Virgil could have suceeded more if they had given him a last name. Annoying complaint time: Grrr... it's VON Erich!! That's like calling the Million Dollar Man "Biase". Yeah, Kerry was a putz at times, but suicide jokes aren't funny. But there is a funny story behind the match. The match was taped well before Survivor Series 1990, but didn't air until early December 1990. So Kerry was at Survivor Series WITH the IC belt, when he had actually dropped it to Mr. Perfect about a week before the event. |

I didn't think they took the title off him because he was suicidal, but more because he was just "heffed up on goofballs" all the time and was presenting a bad image for the #2 Champion. Of course, I'm always wrong, so he probably was suicidal. |

I know but writing Von Erich is irritating for PBP.
I don't know if he was suicidal either. I just know the WWF was worried about him doing it. |

Nice Simpsons reference. I also hate masked guys who you can't tell apart or twins like the Harris Bros. |

I know this is horrible, but I never knew who was Sylvain Grenier and who was Rene Dupree when they were La Resistance. Ditto for the Basham Brothers until I noticed 1 had a minor beard and the other had a rounder face, and any time it's a masked team like the Conquistadors, forget about it. And I just had to work in the Xt'tapalatekettle joke because how often does the card come into play? :P |

I try to use either "Kerry", "Fritz" or "David", since "KVE" could be one of two guys. By the way, when I registered for this board, I was thinking of using the name "Erick Von Erich"... but then I remembered that my usual "ringname" is more widely known ("widely known" meaning "known by three people"). I thought the reason they took the belt off of Kerry was chiefly due to their unofficial babyface/heel title balance. During the time Kerry had the belt, it was one of the few times in the wwf kayfabe era that ALL 3 titles were held by babyfaces (Warrior, Harts, Kerry). Someone had to go. Kerry was the obvious choice, since his novelty quickly wore off after winning the title as Bruti's sub. Guy came in, and a month later he had a title shot. Six weeks after his entrance, he was a champ. Kerry didn't commit suicide until 1993-- a good two and a half years after he dropped the IC belt. At the time of his death, he had been released and also had been implicated for illgeal drug use. Depending on what you want to belive, the rumor is that he had been a drug user since the early 80's, but he became an addict after his motorcycle accident in 1987. Also... you guys didn't hear this from me... but have you been using eMule to find more "matches on my computer"?! |

I got a lot of mine off pwtorrents I believe. I don't know if the heel/face thing would've been a reason mainly because he won the title on the same PPV as the Harts. It wouldn't surprise me whatever the reason was because putting the title on him was a big mistake. |

If a match features both Kevin and Kerry Von Erich, then I just go by first names. If it's a singles match, then hopefully everyone knows who it is when I say "FVE" or "DVE". |

I'm just saying that either the Harts or Kerry had to go, to reset the "balance". There was that transitional/phantom swap where the Harts lost to the Rockers..who were, in turn, supposed to drop the belts to Power & Glory, thereby ending the babyface title sweep. Kerry was very popular in the 80's. At times, he was the #3 or #4 babyface in the country. He didn't prove as popular in the WWF, but the title reign could be attributed to his tremendous popularity over the previous 8 or 9 years. Plus, there's a few theories that Vince was somewhat favorable to the Von Erichs and World Class. He even acknowledged David's death on WWF programming. Vince didn't raid the territory during the 80's --- with the exception of Warrior (who, by the way, is SPECIAL). World Class alumnus Bigelow, Rude, Undertaker and others all eventually made it to the WWF, but they were not scooped out of World Class. |
