Pro Wrestling Xplosion debut
The New Alhambra
Philadelphia, PA
Wednesday 9/13
The Attendance was around 400. Steven DeAngelis did ring announcing and John Finnegan was refereeing. They used the CZW ring. Since they had announced they were going to give the show that old school ECW Arena blue collar gritty feel I was thinking the ring would be the old school ring with black ropes and dark blue canvas but instead we got the CZW ring. The entrance set was different than usual with two big X's on each side of the entrance.
Chris Daniels vs Jay Lethal: Good opening 15 minute match. During the match the ropes broke and the crowd chanted for Daniels to run the ropes and he did in a sarcastic way to a standing ovation. Daniels won with the Angel Wings. Great way to start the show with this match.
After the match ring crew came out to fix the ropes and the fans gave them a hard time and a "you still suck" chant after fixing the ring.
Sonjay Dutt/Ruckus/? vs SAT/CA Elliot: Fun match with a lot of highspots. SAT's did a combo powerbomb/tope on the floor. Sick spot. During this match the ropes in the ring broke again which prompted a "the ropes still suck" chant. All 6 did crowd brawling. Match ended when SAT his Spanish fly on Dutt (which got a good pop from the crowd because the ropes were broken) and Ruckus decided not to break up the pin attempt teasing a future Dutt vs Ruckus feud.
Delirious vs Claudio Castagnoli (Mystery Match): During the match New Jack comes out from the curtain and is being held back by like 10 people who are protecting a member of the ring crew, Everyone stops watching the match and turns their attention to New Jack. At this point the guy New Jack is going after locks himself in the concession stand and New Jack ends up storming outside through the front entrance like he's about to go after someone outside. Nobody is paying attention to the match and everyone is talking about the New Jack incident. All of the sudden a bunch of cops start coming in. Everyone is more interested in counting how many cops are coming in for New Jack than watching the match. It ended up being like over 10 cops coming in through the entrance to go backstage and people were saying there were literally 15 cop cars in the parking lot. Everyone's thinking New Jack is being arrested and starts chanting for New Jack. I'm pretty sure Delirious won by submission.
In what looked like an angle that was booked on the fly to take attention off of what just happened, Steve Corino and Jack Victory come to the ring. Corino says that Teddy Hart no showed the event. Crowd turns on Hart and starts chanting "F*** Teddy Hart". Ruckus then comes to the ring. He sticks up for his friend Teddy. Teddy Hart then runs in through the front entrance and Ruckus and Teddy clean house for a big pop.
They went to a long intermission to fix the ring
Chikara Pro 6 Man Tag match: The match had a lot of botched spots. The crowd had more fun making fun of the wrestlers' silly gimmicks and getting on their case for messing up spots than for the actual match. Alot of New Jack chants during the match. The gimmicks of the wrestlers included: A clown with a mullet wig, a guy with a mask that had an ice cream cone on the top of his head, a power ranger. If the wrestlers involved had more experience and were more polished this thing could be really great. The gimmicks were hilarious. Match ended when Conehead (that's what the crowd was calling him) emptied a bag full of sprinkles on the mat and did his finisher on the sprinkles.
Abyss & Rhino vs. Team 3D: The match was originally supposed to be Abyss vs Rhyno. During ring intros the Dudleys came out to a huge welcome back chant. They got on the mic and challenged Rhino and Abyss to a tag match. During this there was a fan in the front row that called Rhino a faggot and Rhino went after the guy and the guy ran out the front door of the building. Hilarious. Bubba congratulated Rhino and said he caused a lot of riots and started a lot of sh** back in the day in this building but he never made someone run out of the building. Huge pop from the crowd. Then another we want New Jack chant started, and everyone on the opposite side of the building thought Green lantern Fan started the chant (he didn't) and did a "F*** Green Lantern" chant. Then Bubba grabbed a pair of taped up glasses from a fan in the front row and put them on. This started a HUGE whats your name chant. Bubba then went into his old school stuttering gimmick and did the "My name is Buh...Buh...Buh...D-Von slaps him, BUBBA RAY DUDLEY" to a HUGE pop, probably the biggest of the night and a deafening ECW chant. Rhino then grabbed the mic and did his Anti-ECW promo and anti McMahon promo, putting over TNA. This lead to a mixed reaction. Some fans chanted TNA and others chanted "F*** TNA". Finish of the match was Rhino giving Abyss a gore through a table propped in the corner then Dudleys giving Rhino 3D for the pin. The match was short which disappointed alot of people in the crowd but it was still fun and worth the price of admission alone for the pre-match stuff. After the match the Dudleys grabbed a kid from ringside and took him in the ring. The fans kept yelling for them to give the kid 3D. They gave the kid a piece of the broken table and put him on their shoulders.
Arik Cannon vs Chris Hero: This was a good match but a lot of the fans didn't want to see it. Alot of fans were giving Cannon a hard time and the only cheers he got were mocking chants of "lets go fat f****, clap clap clap clap clap". Hero was over though. Fans were pissed that the Dudleys match was short yet this match was given over 20 minutes. Hero wins. Match had a lot of false finishes.
Ian Rotten/Primetime Amy Lee vs Mana/Mickie Knuckles: This match originally was supposed to be New Jack vs Ian Rotten vs Mana in a 3 Way Dance. Very stiff match. Mickie Knuckles had the respect of the crowd for the abuse she took in the match and had alot of chants for her. She has alot of heart. She also looked in better shape than she was the last time I saw her wrestle for PWU. The match ended I think with Ian pinning Mickie.
Post-match Ian got on the mic and immediately another "We want New Jack" chant started. Ian responded saying something to the effect of New Jack was too busy fighting people in concession to care about working the show. Fans booed and started a small "New Jack's gonna kill you" chant. Ian then said that the promoters of this show lost thousands of dollars to give the fans a great show and the fans gave a standing ovation and a PWX chant. Ian then said he was driving back home to Kentucky tonight then driving back to Philly this Saturday for PWU because he loves wrestling.
Homicide vs AJ Styles: Good match. During the match ANOTHER "We want New Jack" chant started and this looked to really piss off Homicide. This was a really good match. AJ won with the Styles Clash. Post match Chris Daniels came to the ring and said he and AJ accept the Dudleys' challenge to a singles match for the next PWX show. The mention of another PWX show got a really good pop from the crowd.
Teddy Hart vs Steve Corino: Hart was really over. In the opening minutes of the match Corino slapped Hart in the mouth so hard that a bunch of blood splattered all over Corino's face. The fans and even Corino had a reaction like what the f***. Stiff match with a lot of crowd heat. Finish was Corino putting Hart in a submission and the ref ringing for the bell even though Hart didn't tap or submit. Crowd chanted "You screwed Teddy" at the ref ala "You screwed Bret". Hart gets on the mic and challenges Corino to finish the fight in the parking lot. Corino doesn't want to and the crowd chanted "Steve's a p***y". They finish the show with a pull apart in the crowd.
End notes: Even though New Jack didn't work the show, he was still the most over wrestler of the night. The crowd was only about 400 but it was a great rowdy crowd. Atlas security seemed really laid back at the show which was cool. This show was a really great show for match quality but was hindered by the broken ring. I'm really interested in seeing how Charlie Bruzzese post-produces the DVD for the show. One thing I really hope they do for future shows is not use the CZW ring. It doesn't give them their own identity when they use the CZW ring with CZW colors.
