Before the show, Homicide beat Delirious, Sterling James Keenan and Claudio Castagnoli in a dark match. (64/51/78) Posted Image Joey Styles: Welcome to NWA Midwest's SLAVE TO THE GRIND from the sold out Woodman Gymnasium on the Campus of Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio!!! Jimmy Bauer: How much coffee did you drink today? I'm Jimmy Bauer, and that's Joey Styles. Thanks for coming along for a great night of wrestling. Joey Styles: Great indeed, Jimmy. Tonight we've got CM Punk vs. Raven, we've got the Chair Swinging Freaks vs. the British Invasion, and we've got what can only be described as an AMAZING main event of Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle for the NWA Midwestern Championship. Jimmy Bauer: Don't forget Batista vs. Abyss, and Kennedy vs. Funk. Joey Styles: Speaking of Terry Funk, we've got him standing by backstage. To be the man.... Terry Funk is looking at the camera. Funk: I've been in this business for most of my life. Hell, I've been in this business for most of EVERYONE'S life now. If I lose tonight, it would mark the first time in my career that I would leave a company on someone else's terms. Which is why it's not gonna happen. In the past few weeks, I've watched the alternatives. I've seen Abdullah the Butcher stab the Rock with a fork. I've watched as two boys who I consider family clobber each other all over New England. I've seen The Juice set loose in Mexico. And that's all fine and dandy. But if I want to be anywhere, I want to be right here. I've fought some of the greatest names in the business. Hogan. Flair. Briscoe. Rhodes. Race. I could go on forever. I've beaten almost all of them. Why in the hell does some spiky haired blonde kid from Green Bay think he could do what they couldn't? I dare you... no, I beg you Ken Kennedy. Show me that you can do it. I'd love to see that you have that kind of stuff. (83) Joey Styles: Wow. Just Wow. Jimmy Bauer: Did you hear who he compared Kennedy to??? Posted Image Hardcore Match: The Chair Swinging Freaks vs. The British Invasion © Both teams stand across the ring from each other. They charge and begin to brawl. The Chair Swinging Freaks get an early advantage, but they can't maintain it. The momentum begins to swing when Burchill surprisingly overpowers Axl Rotten through a table. Burchill and Nigel end up double teaming Balls, even using a steel chair, and Axl can't make the save in time. WINNERS: The British Invasion (72/66/78) After the match, Balls and Axl argue with each other. Balls blames Axl for the loss. Axl shows Balls the table, but Balls blows Axl off. Joey Styles: Could we be seeing the end of the Chair Swinging Freaks??? LAST MAN STANDING: Ken Kennedy vs. Terry Funk Joey Styles: Both of these men will be bringing their A-game, as both of their careers in NWA Midwest are on the line tonight. Unlike the last time these two met, Kennedy is the aggressor through the beginning of the match. His victory has given him some confidence even though he was startled by Funk last night. Funk, though he's by no means unmotivated, seems to lack the fire of the last match. The two brawl like crazy. Kennedy brings in a steel chair. Funk brings in barbed wire. Kennedy brings in tables. Funk brings in the flaming branding iron. It's an insane match, and the longer it goes on, the more exhausted the two look. There are several 7-8 counts in the match, but each man spends their time standing catching their breath. Funk has a table set up outside. Kennedy rolls outside onto the apron. He grabs Funk and tries to set up a suplex onto the table. He gets Funk up, but Funk tries a reversal, Funk tries Kennedy, but Kennedy reverses. Funk falls to his knees. Kennedy reaches to pull Funk up, but Funk punches him in the gut. Funk hits a sunset flip to the outside and sends Kennedy through the table. The ref starts counting. He gets to 6 and both men are still down. Joey Styles: Funk needs to get to his feet! The ref gets to 8. Joey Styles: Both men are still down!!! The ref gets to 10. With both men still down. WINNER: Draw (78/83/67) Jimmy Bauer: There has to be a winner, Joey. Joey Styles: Neither man can stand! EMT's make their way to ringside. Kennedy is just coming around. Funk just can't pull himself up. The crowd gives a standing ovation to both men as they're carried out of the arena. Kennedy tries to make it on his own but can't. Funk won't accept a gurney. Backstage... Kurt Angle is backstage. He's slapping himself and warming up for his match later on against Chris Benoit. (90) Joey Styles: Look at the intensity in Kurt Angle's face! Jimmy Bauer: He looks constipated to me, Styles. CM Punk vs. Raven The match starts with some serious technical work by Punk. Raven isn't surprised like he was last month, though, and clotheslines Punk to the mat. Raven takes over with some hardcore brawling outside the ring, and takes a moment to celerate, which gives Punk the chance to nail some stiff Muay Thai kicks to Raven. The two continue after each other. Jimmy Jacobs runs in to try and attack Raven, but Sterling James Keenan comes in and prevents Jacobs from getting involved. Punk and Raven throw everything they have at each other, and in the end Raven's experience puts him ahead of Punk. WINNER: Raven (87/90/81) Afterwards, Raven offers Punk a handshake. Punk looks at Ravens hand, and the crowd encourages him to shake. He looks around and steps forward before crossing his arms into an "X" and telling Raven "I'm still better than you." Raven shakes his head. Joey Styles: Continual disrespect by CM Punk Jimmy Bauer: Disrespect? He's just telling the truth. Prey.... James Mitchell is backstage with Abyss. James Mitchell tells Batista that Abyss is a living, breathing monster. Batista may be an animal, but Abyss is a pure predator.... (65) Joey Styles: Strong words from James Mitchell. Batista vs. Abyss Mitchell is standing at ringside. The two men pound away at each other. It's like sumo, but with muscle instead of fat. And punching and kicking instead of slapping. Not surprisingly, both men want to overpower the other worker. Also not surprisingly, James Mitchell gets involved. Mitchell costs Batista the match by distracting him long enough for Abyss to set up for the Black Hole Slame WINNER: Abyss (77/79/74) Joey Styles: Mitchell cost Batista the match!! Posted Image Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle Styles pimps the importance of the match and relives the feud for us, including how Angle came to Midwest from the now defunct PTL. Angle and Benoit stare at each other, with Angle pointing to the belt and Benoit shaking his head and holding it possesively. Angle tries to start the match with some wrestling, but Benoit is staying near the ropes. Angle's getting frustrated, and Benoit FINALLY steps away from the ropes to hit Angle from behind and start the match off. Benoit comes at Angle full force and the two wrestle themselves to standstills. The match goes for about twenty five minutes, when Angle starts to get the upper hand. Benoit rolls out of the ring, and Angle follows him. They brawl outside, with Angle takes Benoit to task. Once they get back in the ring, Benoit low blows Angle and the ref calls the match. WINNER BY DQ: Kurt Angle (90/91/89) After the bell is rung, Benoit rolls out of the ring and grabs the belt. Kurt kicks the ref's ass. Joey Styles: Kurt Angle is not a happy man, nor should he be. Chris Benoit just wussed out. Overall: 81 Slave to the Grind was attended by 4202 people! We made $168080 from ticket sales. |

Ah, I thought it was kind of early for Benoit to be losing the title, so the DQ finish makes sense. Really good show, Swiggy. |
