WORLD-1 Wire for January 8, 2007
Big News! Results from Rebirth Or Destruction and MORE!

Corino Regains AWA World title!

The Trouble King Steve Corino regained the AWA World heavyweight championship last night at Rebirth Or Destruction in Pottstown , PA defeating Ric Converse in a great, but controversial match that saw Converse filing an immediate protest.

Corino set Converse up for the Lariat but ducked just in time and right in front of referee Bryce Remsberg. Converse then kneed Corino in the back knocking the referee out of the ring. Sterling James Keenan ran in and assisted Converse into piledriving Corino. Matt Bennett, another W-1 referee, ran in to make the count but Corino kicked out. Ricky Landell came out and fought SJK off while Converse went for his patented Richter Scale finisher. Corino landed on his feet, Converse went for a clothesline but Corino caught and rolled him in for a Kido Clutch to become the new champion!

Converse immediately protested to original referee Bryce Remsberg seemed to favor Converse. But Pro-Wrestling WORLD-1 officials Curt Lemon and Jody Peterman met today via conference call with other AWA members and they have recognized Corino as the new AWA World champion.

BUT Converse and many other AWA members are claiming that the match should have ended in a no-contest the moment the first referee was down and the title still belongs to Converse. AWA President Dale Gagne will look at the footage this week and get with the Advisory Committee and make a formal decision but Steve Corino WILL defend the AWA World championship next week against Takao Omori and Ikuto Hidaka in Tokyo , Japan !

Whoa, that was unexpected. How long had Converse been the champion, feels like it had been a while.

That really sucks. I'm a Corino fan, but geez, Converse was rolling. Now back to Obscurity for Ric Converse and the AWA title.

Have you ever liked him? Or is this a "He's let himself go" kind of thing

I've never liked him and really started hating him when he supposedly reinvented himself from working in Zero-One but was still doing the same boring shit in the ring.

Ah. See, I liked him in ECW. I saw him live and it made me like him more, because he went Balls out for a crowd of around 50-100 in an Armory in backwater Tennessee.

The reason I ask is because I know people didn't like him initially, but I figured he's an easier target now that he's not "in shape"

I would have no problem with Steve Corino as some nobody mid-carder in the WWE or TNA. It's just he's only seems willing to work where he can main event. And he's a sucky main eventer.

Weird, I've always been a really big Corino mark, and really enjoy his work.

Corino is one of those guys who I understand the criticism and think there are valid reasons to dislike him... but I can't help but enjoy him anyway.

I enjoyed him in ECW when he first became heel. Then it's been all downhill from there.....

I've been a Corino fan since he first dyed his hair blonde in tribute to Bobby Duncam Jr. However, this thing with basically booking himself as champ is getting kinda old. It's really cool that he elevated Converse. Converse is completely deserving of any attention he gets, and should get a lot more, but make no mistake, Corino gave him the rub, big time. I do think it would have been nice to get him involved with Zero-1 a little, maybe even losing the belt in Japan.
