Stephen Strasburg's debut and he rings up 14 K's against the Pirates. That translates to, what, about 8 K's against an MLB team?

Actually, despite the Pirates horrible offensive performance all season, they aren't a big strike out team overall. So I'd say 10 to 12 against a normal team.

When's he pitching against a non-bottom dwelling team? I think I caught on MASN2 he's got at least two more starts against teams that aren't lightning the world on fire.

I think he might have 4 or 5 starts under his belt before he really has a challenge. I think Cincinnati will be his first real test as a pitcher.

I went to my first Orioles game last night against the Yankees.... and the O's won!! Although I was starting to get a little worried in the top of the 9th, where a bunch of Yankee fans (there were a good amount) started doing a "Derek Jeter" (clap clap clap clap clap) chant.

How do you turn around a franchise mired in 18 straight losing seasons?! Fire the mascot! Okay, so that'd be too mean...so you fire one of the unofficial plush-supporters of the team.

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Quote:

"Andrew Kurtz, 24, of New Brighton, one of the 18 men who take turns posing as pierogies in a crowd-pleasing race after the fifth inning of every game at PNC Park, was dismissed by the team Thursday because he posted disparaging remarks about the Pirates on his Facebook page ...

"(His message was) aimed at team president Frank Coonelly, general manager Neal Huntington and manager John Russell. It read: 'Coonelly extended the contracts of Russell and Huntington through the 2011 season. That means a 19-straight losing streak. Way to go Pirates.

The link also includes some strategy on racing. For instance, didja' know that an added advantage of being Jalapeno Hannah merits you the opportunity to whack someone with a purse?!

Actually, I'm more surprised that the Running Pierogies were actually PAID EMPLOYEES. I always thought they just picked four random fans before the game.

Yankees about to pick up Cliff Lee...meaning he could potentially make his debut in pinstripes during the All-Star Game.

Bob Sheppard, the Yankees' "Voice of God" passed away at the young age of 99. But Derek Jeter still plans to use his Sheppard-recorded intro, even at tomorrow's All-Star Game. So I'm sure there will be a little segment and some Piano Music commemorating Sheppard.

The Rangers nabbed Lee from under the Yankees, and I'm happy. Texas deserves a little something nice once and a while.

Will someone explain to me how Joey Votto, one of the best hitters in the NL, if not all of MLB, only made it on the All-Star team as a last minute "Fans pick the last All-Star" gimmick? How did he not get selected by the manager? How does Omar Infante make it when Votto doesn't? Is this not ridiculous?

I'm surprised the Orioles swept a 4-game series against the Rangers. First time they swept a 4-game road series since 1995.

It's been a sad week for Yankee fans. First we lose the voice of God, and now the Boss.

Not too bad of an All-Star Game. Not too memorable, either... but it was the usual "Live Action Baseball Card" that I usually dig.

Only thing I could have done without was the "Everyday All-Stars" crap, complete with sappy, cue-card reading actors. I wouldn't have minded if this campaign had, y'know, been SEEN ONCE BEFORE on an MLB game.

The Pepsi/MLB "compete for good ideas" campaign and the Stand up To Cancer stuff has been promoted before, so they fit in. So to suddenly have this "Everyday All-Star" crap placed front-and-center and then beaten over our heads was ridiculous. Then to have the players mingle with them, as if it was some SPECIAL MOMENT? What the hell would they say? "Congratulations. Good job, person I have never met before on your Meals on Wheels thingie". "Umm...thank you Mr. Mauer... good luck tonight. Get a hit".

Agreed. It seemed a bit out of a place and forced, and I usually don't mind sappy stuff like this.

As for the game... enjoyed the first half, when it was going at a nice, brisk pace with some nice defensive plays shining. Then the slow-downs from constant pitching changes tarnished it as usual. Nice to see A-Rod got the "Pujols" treatment from his own manager. I refer to the 2007 All-Star Game when La Russa decided not to use Pujols during the game, for whaever reasons.
