The Yankees couldn't buy a starting pitcher, so they bought Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns instead to shore up the bench.

The Tampa Bay Rays designate DH Pat Burrell for assignment.

Saw the Giants were in town this week, with Burrell in tow. Missed that, but I guess he's been with them for awhile. He's hitting .282 which, for him, is like flirting with .400

A-Rod finally hit his 600th hom run. Much like Sammy Sosa's, I didn't really feel anything in terms of emotion, unlike when Ken Griffey Jr. did it.

Watched a little bit of "MLB Tonight" on MLB Network, last night. Y'know, I don't mind ESPN and the local channels messing up every now and then, but when you're MLB Network and you start talking about how "Edward Jackson made his debut for the White Sox"...well, that's more than a little embarrassing.

Oh, went to Target to pick up some dog food and grabbed a pack of 2010 Topps baseball cards at the register. Got an "insert" card of Tommy Hanson. All I can say is: "Ahhhh!!! Noooo! Sportsflicks are back!!"

If you haven't seen these, they're supposed to be "3D cards", but they resemble those old Cracker Jack motion card thingies.

Went to the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox game on Saturday night and got to throw out the first pitch. I kicked the rubber a little, worked from the stretch and checked the runner at first before I threw it. Threw a slider and my shitty catcher didn't frame the zone well.

I simply lucked out-- walked up to a promo booth outside the field before the game, spun a wheel, got a free t-shirt and the chance to go down on the field for the first pitch.

They had a special promo night for Goose Gossage, a Colorado Springs native. So I got to watch the little pre-game ceremony on the field, about 20 feet away from Gossage, the Sky Sox manager and some PR guy. Of course, I was prepared-- had a ball with me and bugged Gossage for an autograph after the ceremony had ended.

They passed out a Gossage figurine to the the first 1,500. I missed that, but the pitch thing was a lot of fun. Better than catching a home run ball. Since I'm a dork, I had someone take a picture while I was out there. I "autographed" the ball they gave me and will find a little ballholder/picture plaque to display both items.

Really hating this year, as half the Red Sox have been injured at some point.

On the other hand, the Reds are doing surprisingly good. Dusty must be sucking on some magic toothpicks.

And I went to a Johnson City Cardinals game (Rookie League, and it shows) and the announcers/PA guys loved my obnoxious need to yell Charge after the trumpet. It's compulsive. And they made me do it three times in a row. Not sure the batter liked that

Hollering "Charrrrge" always reminds me of Wilma and Betty's shopping battle cry from the Flintstones. So for you to emulate Wilma and Betty in public; you have my congratulations, sir.

I'd rather see the return of the Bud-Man, but MLB's officially promoting a "Captain Morgan First Pitch" campaign:

Please Enjoy Responsibly

The local TV broadcasters have been making a big deal out of how Jason Giambi has been giving hitting tips to Carlos Gonzalez. Umm....not sure that's a good thing, guys.

A guy who's post steroid batting average is probably under .250 and still thinks he can hack balls out of parks like he used to when he was on the juice shouldn't be giving tips on hitting. Maybe back in the day he could explain plate dicipline*, but that's it.

*-Assuming i'm right in thinking he took a lot of walks. Never followed west coast teams, and most of his time as Yankee, I just refered to him as "cheater" and "he couldn't carry Tino Martinez's jock" and "fuck him."

So the Reds are 71-52 right now and have a 3.5 game lead. I'm really getting my hopes up as they seem legit this year but I have that nagging in the back of my head that they're going to blow it.

Strasburg left the game with an injury yesterday. I'm starting to wonder if his arm can actually take pitching in the big leagues.

Lou Piniella officially retired, yesterday. Walked away from the Cubs to be with his sick mom.

That's a nice sentiment and all, but you have to think that if the Cubs were contending there would be no way he'd leave. Also-- as bad as this sounds-- when his mom passes in a few years (or sooner), I wouldn't be surprised if some team came calling for Lou's services.

Saw an SI column declaring him as a potential Hall of Famer. Valid point, but by no means is he a shoo-in. His managerial career definitely outranked his playing career.

Of note:
-Along with Dick Williams, is the only manager to win 90 games with four teams (Yankees, Reds, Mariners, Cubs). Fittingly, he was a 3-time Manager of the Year.

-Won the World Series in 1990 while helming the Reds, in what was (at the time) billed as a huge upset.

-Beat the crap out of Rob Dibble

-Managed the Devil Rays......

I think he would like the last one of those you listed to be taken off the books, and have more emphasis on whooping Dibble's ass.

The Rangers had a team effort no-hitter spoiled in the 9th by Joe Mauer.

Personally, I've never been a huge fan of the "multiple pitchers no hitter." It just doesn't seem as impressive when 3 or 4 pitchers do it. The impressive thing about no-hitters, other than incredible luck, is one pitcher just dominating a lineup three times through the order. When the starter does it for 5, and say, a new reliever every inning does it, it's just not the same.
