With the season over and postseason awards officially in the books, it's time to start babbling about free agent signings, trades and other shit. OK, go!

The Tigers have (unofficially) added Victor Martinez, which makes me wonder about Boston more than Detroit. With "V-Maht" gone, and Varitek a dead fish, what does that leave Boston with for a catcher?

Oh, and the Rays were ALSO screwed by Detroit, losing solid set-up man Joaquin Benoit in free agency to those bastards.

Saltalamacchia! Can't wait to hear how that's pronounced in Boston.

Four years for $50 mil? They can have him. Though I would still like to retain Martinez because I'm not sold on Salty. I've been a fan of his in the past but his injuries leave question marks. Varitek would be a great clubhouse influence, but probably not for the money he wants.

There's always Molina on the market. Could be a good catch. *rimshot*

BTW, the Reds signed Dontrelle Willis to a minor league deal. He's moving to the bullpen

Wow, would that give Detroit the worst defensive infield of all time?

Detroit are the AL version of the Mets. They throw money at all of these big name free agents and it always blows up in their face.

They got lucky enough to make it to the World Series in 2006. I think.

(checks)

Oh yeah. 2006. What a wonderful World Series THAT was.

He has fallen so far the last 4 years, if he wasn't a lefty he wouldn't be in baseball anymore

Arizona picks up Zach Duke from Pittsburgh. Not a big deal, but maybe Duke will benefit from a new atmosphere, away from the pit of dispair that's known as being a member of the Pirates for the last 18 years.

Derek Jeter is looking for $25 mil. a year. Wow.

I know that he wants "respect", but let me reflect on a prior incident when a Yankee great was given the middle finger.

Bernie Williams. Coming off a long-term contract that was paying him like $12 mil. a year towards the end of it. Contract expires. He's offered a contract for $1.5 mil. And he accepted it because he wanted to stay in New York.

Jeter is a greedy bastard. He's a 36 year old shortstop coming off his worst year, and he wants MVP/Dinger Hitter money. Fuck him.

I am a diehard Yankee fan, but have never been as huge a Jeter fan as most Yankees fans

Before the offseason started I had said he was worth $10 million a year for 3 years. I understand the Yankees paying him $15 million for 3 years just for his public image (I don't agree with that but I understand it).

But for him to want $25 million a year is ridiculous. Just because A-Roid got that much, it's different circumstances. ARod was coming off an MVP year, he had not been outed yet as a steroid abuser, he was what 32 years old and was always a better player than Jeter. Not saying AROD was worth that much either, but Jeter is a fool in this case

It's that special time of year... when MLB.com does blurbs for everyone debuting on the HoF ballot. Really, I love Tino Martinez to death, but he's a "Hall of Very Good" guy, but no way would I say "Vote him in!"

Rockies signed Tulowitzki for, basically, the rest of his (significant) career. Roughly in the neighborhood of an extra $160 million. A bit of a gamble, since he's missed significant time in 2008 and 2010. But when he's been fully healthy, the Rockies made the playoffs, so I think they're a little over-eager in that regard.

Of note to the Yankees and Derek Jeter: when Tulowitzki is 30 in 2015, he'll be making $20 mil.

I think everybody's over the whole "Slumdog Millionaire" trend. Including the Pirates. They released one of their Indian pitching "prospects".

Pittsburgh released a number of Minor League players last week, the most notable of which was right-hander Dinesh Patel. Patel was one of two pitchers who were discovered in an Indian reality TV show and then signed by the Pirates in 2008.

Neither Patel, nor Rinku Singh, the winner of the "Million Dollar Arm" contest, had previously played baseball. In his two years with the organization, Patel posted a 5.27 ERA in 15 relief appearances.

Though Patel's professional baseball dream is now over, Singh still remains with the organization. He is currently playing winter ball in Australia, where he has pitched 4 1/3 innings in two appearances. Singh, a left-hander, spent most of the season with the Gulf Coast League Pirates, with whom he debuted in 2009.

Singh, 22, allowed six earned runs on 20 hits in 20 2/3 innings with the GCL club. He struck out 20 and walked eight. He was promoted to short-season State College near the end of the season and made one scoreless relief appearance with the Spikes.
