while Mays is an all-time great, he is a perfect example of someone who didn't know when to quit. He hung on too long |

I think almost everyone falls under that category, with a few exceptions here and there, but as an iconic image of greatness, he stands out more obviously. |

Don't know if ya' noticed this, but the Pirates have been sporting new predominantly yellow jerseys this spring. Stuff that would make Bert Campaneris and the 1975 Oakland A's feel at home. Right now, these are only being used as Spring Training jerseys. But I wouldn't be surprised if something similar eventually pops up as a 4th or 5th regular-season jersey. Posted Image |

The Mets show the door to Luis Castillo AND Oliver Perez, meaning 18 million goes to two guys doing nothing or trying to catch on somewhere else. Castillo signed with the Phillies and already pissed everyone off by no-showing for his physical. |

the Mets signing Castillo when they did was dumb because he was coming off an injury, but at least at one time he was a very good player and $25 million for 4 years would have been fine if not for that injury Oliver Perez though that was moronic. I understand he had great stuff I understand he is a lefty But to pay him $12 million a year for 3 years was fucking ridiculous And this is a Yankees fan talking, imagine how I would feel if I was a Mets fan |

Ollie Perez is supposedly being picked up by the Nationals. He had good stuff (and flashes with the Mets), but I'd say his career took a huge nosedive when he broke his foot while kicking a laundry in Yankee Stadium in June 2005. For that matter, the entire 2005 Pirates did, as well. They had been a few games over .500 when they went into NYC that year. That's a case where an interleague series was significant to one side (in a negative way). Oh, and to back up a few pages: Garrett Atkins was released by the Pirates last week. I was hoping he could regain his form, but it was not to be. |

I saw Mark Prior pitch for the Yankees the other night, an just remembered... Mark Prior is with the Yankees. And hs arm didn't fall off for the entire innning he pitched. As for Ollie, the only time he was worth anything was Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, and maybe the 2007 regular season. It still wasn't worth $12 mil. a year, in any league, in any situation. I dont care if he can throw with both arms while standing in a kiddie pool filled with mayonnaise. The definition of a flash in the pan. |

He had what? One good year? I know people had a massive boner for the guy in 2007/2008. And he pretty much has sucked since. |

I am not surprised Perez was picked up just because he is a lefty just how it is in MLB As others said he has one very good season and another one that was pretty good......And pretty much sucked the rest of the time |

He had the old "Potential" moniker, too. In 2004 he struck out over 200 batters; first Pirate since Bob Veale to do that. That gave me my Perez-Boner heading into 2005. |

Am I alone in hating the dumbed-down production for sports? I know having the score on the screen needs to be represented, but over the years, more and more is added. Watch a YES Network game, and they actually keep track of pitch counts. Seriously... why does the fan watching on t.v. need to know the pitch count? And now ESPN has a KZone, like in video games. Really, how hard is it to track the pitches and determine your own balls and strikes?! Does TV need to do all your thinking for you? |

The Cubs dump Carlos Silva for being a worthless pile, the Nats trade Nyjer Morgan to Milwaukee or Nails' kid, and Seattle dumps Gabe Gross after batting 2 for 27 for the spring. GOTTA LOVE LATE SPRING TRAINING MOVES! |

And in more News of Great Insignificance: Mike Hampton retires. Here's a guy who looked like he could be a top-of-the-rotation guy in the late 90's. Then he signed with the Rockies and it all went to hell. Although Hampton's first-half of 2001 was; until last season; THE best first-half of any Rockies pitcher in franchise history. |

I'm not too sure since I'm not a Mets fan, but didn't Hampton completely shun them after the 2000 season, before signing with Colorado? |
