The "legend" was that (former) Rockies exec Jerry McMorris took Hampton to dinner and wrote on a napkin: "To: Mike Hampton. Years: ______ Amount: __________".

I'd shun just about anybody if some gonad with money presented that to me.

I'd sell my own mother into slavery for that napkin, except put my name where Mike Hampton's name is.

MLB Network is running a special, tonight, about Topps baseball cards. I hope it focuses on the connection between baseball and Topps and how they help to chronicle the game. Rather than the dealer/money side of things.

I'm sure there will at least be a mention of the dealer market, but if it that "Guy Who Has Appeared on Good Morning America" shows up, my foot's going into the TV screen. I can't recall his name, but his mugshot used to be all those shitty mail-order lists in the early 90's. "Mr. Mint" or some other ridiculous nickname.

Personally, I couldn't care less about the financial/worth of cards. I just love collecting them because they're like gateways into the past. When I pull out my Yankees binder, I can turn to any page, find any player, or "season highlight" and go on and on about it to whoever I'm talking to. I don't think I've ever enjoyed telling stories or moments more than baseball stories. I can do that with all 30 teams, granted not as much so as the Yanks.

The whole speculators' market and the "value/worth" of baseball cards is really a black eye on them. I agree- they're simply great snapshots of the season.

I mean, what Yankee fan wouldn't want a Stump Merrill card from 1990?! :)

I know! Manager card for the Yankees from the 80's through early 90's was like finding the missing link between man and ape.
