White Sox sign Adam (strikeout) Dunn for 4 years. It'll work for them because he'll probably just DH instead of dropping routine fly balls in left. Red Sox are pursuing Crawford & Werth, while trying to trade for Adrian Gonzalez. Interesting. Oh, they want to re-sign Beltre & Varitek, too! |

The Sawx pick up Adrian Gonzalez after, what, 2 years of potential deals fell through? Good pick up, obviously, but they already had a pretty good first baseman in Youk, but I guess this means they won't worry about resigning Beltre. I'm still not liking the Varitek resigning, though. With him and Saltalamachia(sp?), I don't see a great catching duo for a World Series contender. Varitek, for all he's done for the team in the past, is way past it both on offense and defense, and Salty is a Quadruple A guy. I'm a little surprised they didn't do much more to bring Martinez back. Yeah, he's defense is below par, but he still hits far better than most catchers in the majors. |

Varitek's resigning is equal parts clibhouse influence and his experience with the pitchers. He's there to provide consistency in the backstop. Can someone explain to me why Jayson Werth got a deal for $126 million and 7 yrs? He's not THAT good. His deal must have Crawford ready to swim in an Uncle Scrooge style vault |

Agreed. It's a small market team desperate for success that their payroll is dedicated to paying mediocre players MVP money. The only reason to watch the Nats won't be showing up no earlier than August. |

Werth is better than mediocre as Scrooge put, but yes I agree he is not worth anything near what he got He was the 4th best hitter on the Phillies, I assume he will be the Nationals best hitter, big difference |

Sorry, I didn't mean to underplay Werth as much, but as a fan of a small market team, we're known for, when do spend the cash, spending it on average players or washed up players that were MVP's about a decade earlier. |

You can underplay Werth if you wish, I'm not a fan of his or the Phillies or nationals for that matter Just meant he was not washed up either I agree though, if they are going to spend that kind of money for that many years, Werth is not the guy Maybe Adrian Gonzalez would have been , not sure if they could have traded for him though |

The Dodgers are becoming a soap opera or a really bad wrestling angle (or both). A judge ruled that a divorced couple are CO-owners of the team. Yeah, that's not going to create a terrible mess for the franchise. In other news... White Sox resign Paul Konerkoor 3 yrs/37 mil. and the Cubs sign Carlos Pena to a 1 yr/$10 mil. contract to strike out 200 times and bat under .200. Maybe for less money, he's worth a shot, but 10 MIL!? He made that much last year for stinking it up. |

Considering it is only a one year deal, I think $10 million per is fine for Pena He had three consecutive years of at least 30HR and 100RBI before he tailed off last year. So I say give him the one year deal and if he reverts to form then it was worth it........if not then say good bye Konerko I am surprised he got that much. I also thought he was about 50 years old by now not 34 |

As someone who watched Pena every day, he's tailed off every year as a Ray*. He was a .280/46 HR/120 RBI guy in 2007. Then in 2008 it dropped off. Then in 2009 it dropped off more. Then last year, it was painful to watch him bat in a clutch situation. For 5-6 mil., no problem. Hell, go 7 if you really want to. But 10? I'm sure the Cubs could've found better, but it's the Cubs. 102 years of fucking things up. *-I would also note before 2007, he had ONE pretty good major league season with Detroit (2004 I think it was?), but other than that, not much to show for himself. I'm not saying "Boo Pena!", because on the contrary, he was one of my favorite Rays players. But when it comes to money, I would've low-balled him and stayed there. |

The Rays continue to baffle me with some of their potential deals. 1. We've already admited we have no shot in hell of retaining C.C. or Soriano, and Pena just signed with the Cubs. 2. We resign Quadruple-A-4-Lifer Dan Johnson, who is now a potential 1st baseman for opening day, unless Ben Zobrist gets the gig, which brings us to... 3. We have to fill a gap in left field, and if Zobrist becomes the every day first bagger, then who mans right? Outfield depth has become increasingly shallow. We've got Desmond Jennings, an unfinished product, and guys like Ruggiano and some other guy who I can't remember. 4. Jason Bartlett has been pegged for trades to Baltimore and San Diego, and both deals see us giving up our starting shortstop for mediocre at best middle relief. Oh, and we want to bring Mark Hendrickson back, who's most glorious moment as a Ray was falling over delivering a pitch to start a game. 5. John Jaso is our starting catcher, and Kelly Shoppach the backup. Ew. So, with that out of the way, we have the 2011 Tamp Bay Rays... C - John Jaso/Kelly Shoppach 1B - Dan Johnson/Ben Zobrist 2B - Sean Rodriguez SS - Reid Brignac 3B - Evan Longoria CF - B.J. Upton LF - Desmon Jennings? RF - Justin Ruggiano? DH - ? SP - Matt Garza, James Shields, David Price, Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann RP - Andy Sonnanstine... and that's it CP - ? |

Pena stikes me as a guy that has no skills left as a hitter, other than the long ball. My problem with the Werth deal. He was in a lineup where he was super protected on any given day. Plus, he isn't hitting elite level numbers. And he's old. If he saw this deal to the end he would be 38 years old. He's going to start tailing off halfway into that deal. |

That's what I was saying in my earlier post, big difference between him being the 4th best hitter on the Phillies (I would put Howard, Utley and Rollins as better than him) and now being the best hitter on the Nationals |

The Red Sox land Carl Crawford for 7 yrs at 142 mil. Probably would have been cheaper If not for Werth's redonk deal. I'm as happy as a pig in shit, honestly. This has been a great week for me baseball wise |
