The Red Sox land Carl Crawford for 7 yrs at 142 mil. Probably would have been cheaper If not for Werth's redonk deal.

I'm as happy as a pig in shit, honestly. This has been a great week for me baseball wise

I was just about to post about Crawford but Swigg beat me to it

Crawford is not worth that much because no one is

Even though I hate the Red Sox, I will give them credit, they landed two huge bats in the past week

That's overpaying for Crawford but that's what it was going to cost after the Nationals overpaid Werth by way too much. I still don't know why anyone would have signed Werth when the superior version of him was still on the market.

The Rays continue to baffle me with some of their potential deals.

Jennings, an unfinished product, and guys like Ruggiano and some other guy who I can't remember.

4. Jason Bartlett has been pegged for trades to Baltimore and San Diego, and both deals see us giving up our starting shortstop for mediocre at best middle relief. Oh, and we want to bring Mark Hendrickson back, who's most glorious moment as a Ray was falling over delivering a pitch to start a game.

5. John Jaso is our starting catcher, and Kelly Shoppach the backup. Ew.

So, with that out of the way, we have the 2011 Tamp Bay Rays...

C - John Jaso/Kelly Shoppach
1B - Dan Johnson/Ben Zobrist
2B - Sean Rodriguez
SS - Reid Brignac
3B - Evan Longoria
CF - B.J. Upton
LF - Desmon Jennings?
RF - Justin Ruggiano?
DH - ?

SP - Matt Garza, James Shields, David Price, Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann
RP - Andy Sonnanstine... and that's it
CP - ?

I heard yesterday that the Rays might be accepting offers for Garza. Potentially, if a team can't land Greinke or Lee, Garza would be a good grab.

But it was one of those "Winter Meeting Rumors", so it's 50/50 in terms of reality.

Can't say I'm not a little heart broken by CC going to Boston, but at the same time, he deserves to play somewhere where fans really care. Part of me was hoping he went to LA, and reunite my super-team of Kaz and Crawford. Oh well. :(

I am surprised that the Yankees did not push harder for Crawford, but I dont blame them for not paying him that much money

They need Cliff Lee more than they need Crawford anyway

Lee will prob get $25 million a year for 6 years which is insane, as while I think he is a very good pitcher who is great in the playoffs (before this past WS anyway), he is not worth that money

$20 mil per for 5 years is what he's worth but he will go past that

He's already over 30 years old and pitchers contracts for more than 5 years usually end with the last 2 years being crap

As a Yankees fan as much as I like they spend lots of $$ to field what they think is the best team possible:

How sad is it that 2 years after signing CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett to huge contracts, they have the need to get Cliff Lee now

And they do need him especially if Pettite retires (I think Pettite stays)

CC has earned it (if it's possible to earn that much) but AJ was not worth it to begin with and after last year forget it

Then they have trades for guys like Javy Vasquez who already stunk out the joint for them in '04and signing guys like Kei Igawa (remember him?)

And they've ruined Chamberlain, though I always felt he should have stayed in the pen after his '07 success

If they want to, the Yankees can find a way to get rid of AJ Burnett and his contract. Similar to the way they dealed off Randy Johnson. I want to say "Kevin Brown", too... but I think that was the Dodgers moving his big contract to the Yankees.

Jeff Weaver and a couple of minor leaguers that I dont think ever did anything in the majors were traded to the Dodgers for Kevin Brown

That I remember

Googled what happened to Brown afterwards and he retired from the Yankees. I didn't remember that

Kevin Brown was the most untradable piece of crap in Yankee history. No one was willing to take his ridiculous contract once he came to New York.

He had an insane contract from his Dodger deal; I think it included a private jet for his family in addition to the huge dollar amount.

As for what happened to him afterwards-- are you referring to when he punched a hole in the wall? He was always tempermental and the media usually hated the guy. I'm not saying he was given a bad rep... just that he was usually known as a weenie.

He under-performed horribly in New York, broke his hand 3 weeks before the playoffs, and just irked the hell out of me.

My opinion is, the Yankees are going to throw some ridiculous deal at Cliff Lee. I'm talking like a 7 year deal worth 210 million.

2 words. Salary cap.

Yes, I'm a Yankees fan, but we're not too far from that being a possible deal, wether it's the Yanks or some other fucked in the head team throwing money around like water.

I could see them going 7 years but not at $30 mil per

$25 million per, so $175 million total

I really think they should leave it at $150 million for 6 years, $25 million per

If the Nationals want to offer 7 years then let them. If Lee wants to go to a last place team, then just like Jayson Werth, let him go

I am stunned Lee signed with the Phillies

$100 million for 5 years, turned down almost $40 million more from Yankees and Rangers

Figured if he didn't go to the Yankees he would stay with Texas

On paper that is an insane rotation, Halladay, Lee, Oswalt and Hamels

They got panned for trading him last offseason after trading for Halladay. Then they trade for Oswalt mid-season and wind up getting Lee back as a free agent.

My team, the Yankees are in trouble especially if Pettite retires
